These totally opposed views of history lay at the heart of the conflict and misunderstanding between theological liberals and their fundamentalist opponents. The liberal party came increasingly to view history in the sense of natural development as the key to understanding all reality, including Scripture. Fundamentalists, on the other hand, insisted more and more that the supernatural account of things in Scripture was the key to understanding anything about natural reality, including history.
