The usual Sunday slack occupies the rest of the evening. Beatrice has decided she’s a vegetarian and refuses to eat the chicken. Ben whines about end-of-the-year homework being pointless.
When I return upstairs, the kids, who are supposed to be asleep, are squabbling, and beneath the crack of their door I see the lights flickering on and off. Finally, I barge in and hiss: “Go to sleep. Now.” I hardly recognize my voice.
