“Fuck the leather, fuck the lace. Cheers to the ones who sit on our face!”

“You know, if you really want to keep me quiet, you could give me something to fill my mouth with and shut me up. It’s worked for others in the past.”

“Heya sweetheart, wanna dance?” I slid my gaze to the cowboy standing beside me, the same one who’d been making eyes at me from across the table. Up close, he’d lost his appeal. I mean, he was cute in a boyish way—blond hair, blue eyes, and a cocky swagger that I’m sure he thought made him look cool—but there was no edge to him. There was nothing there that screamed, “I’ll fuck you into a coma.”

Bishop shook his head. “Where the fuck do you come up with this shit?” I shrugged. “Unlike some people—and I’m not naming names, of course—I read books with words, not just pictures. I know it’s a crazy concept. Maybe if you tried it some time, you could learn a thing or two.”

Lennox Hayes and I were like fire and ice. She burned hotter than a thousand fucking suns and had the temper to boot. I was the dick who acted unaffected but was anything but. That woman had a way of getting under my skin like no one else had. She drove me crazy, slipping further into madness with each moment we spent together—which was way more than I liked.

My words stopped as she reached forward with her other hand. She grabbed my hat and placed it on her head with smug satisfaction. “If you want me to get down, Bishop,” she said, running a finger along the gold chain around my neck, “then you better make me.” I barely heard the grumble of disappointed men behind me, too aware that Lennox Hayes was wearing my hat. My. Fucking. Hat.

Lennox deserved to run as free as the Mustangs in Montana.

“You’re a part of this family, Bishop. Dunno how many times I have to tell you that. So, unless you have something better to do, I’m gonna kindly ask you to sit your ass down and join us.”

“You don’t need anyone to buy you shit, killer. You’re more than capable of doing that on your own.” “Doesn’t mean I have to,” she shot back. “Besides, he was cute! I liked the way he blushed when I touched his arm.” “Maybe for a puppy,” I said dryly. “Doesn’t really seem like your type.” She scoffed. “What would you know about my type?” “I know enough,” I said, stepping forward. Her sweet, honeyed scent filled the space between us. “And we both know a kid like that wouldn’t be able to keep up with a hellion like you.”

“Boys, if I could give you one piece of life advice, it’d be this… Never try to win an argument with your wife. It doesn’t matter how small it may seem. Just let it go. It ain’t worth it.”

“Doug, sometimes I wonder where your girls got their sass from. Then you go and open your mouth, and it hits me.” He reached forward and plucked a steaming piece of bread from the plate, pointing it toward the head of the table. “They’re just like you.” At Lincoln’s words, a knowing smirk crossed Doug’s lips. “And that’s the best compliment you’ve ever given me, son.”

Lennox raised one of her perfect brows. “Fingers crossed you don’t choke on a carrot. That’d be such a shame. I don’t know the Heimlich, so you’d be shit out of luck.” “It would,” I agreed, filling my bowl. “Who else would take your verbal punches and roll with them?”

“You can’t steal my dog!” He cried. “That’s illegal!” “I’m not stealing your dog, Nick. Looks like she’s running away to a better home,” Lennox said, running her fingers along the top of the dog’s head.

I bit the inside of my cheek. Don’t ruin a perfect moment, Lennox. No jokes. No snark. You can do this.

Like, if you were trapped on a desert island and could bring any five people with you, who would they be?” A question like that wouldn’t stump most people, but I wasn’t most people. I didn’t have anyone who didn’t already belong to someone else. No one for me to put first or vice versa. It felt pathetic to admit that.

“I’m scared,” he whispered, green eyes brimmed with silver. “I don’t know how to do this. I don’t know how to be the partner you want—the one you deserve—because I have been on my own for so long, but goddammit, I wanna try if you’ll let me.”

None of them were ever dominant in the way I needed. Even when they tried, it felt awkward and forced, which made the moment so unbelievably unsexy that it ruined the whole mood.

And there, in the middle of it all, was Lennox sitting at a table with a stack of chips. She stared at poor Keith while his gaze flitted between the hand he’d been dealt and the pot in the middle. Callie sat at her feet, munching on a big old bone.

“Smartass,” he muttered. I paused, turning around and giving him a wink. “You always told me it was better to be a smartass than a dumbass.” His laughter followed me into the kitchen, and I swore I heard him chuckle, “That’s my girl.”
