It isn’t until I’m watching him wheel out of the room that I realize I’m going to be alone in the building with a man who gave me the hottest kiss of my life but who doesn’t even remember my name. 6 ROMAN Of course, I remembered her. I would’ve remembered her even if she wasn’t the last woman I was interested in. She looks even better now than she did that night at the bar. Which shouldn’t make sense, because a tiny dress should always beat out hospital scrubs. But it’s not the outfit, it’s…her energy.

“I know you don’t want to let yourself hope for it,” she says, eyes searching mine, “and that’s okay. I’ll carry the hope for a little while. I just need you to put your trust in me. Because I swear to you, Roman—” Determination blazes in her eyes. “I will get you on your feet.”

“Whether this takes one day, one week, a hundred weeks…we’re going to get it. We’ll figure out how to get you there. And not because you’re no one if you can’t walk, but because you’re strong enough to make it happen.”

His eyes never look away from mine. “All I know is, I’m better with you in my life. Professional or not.” There’s a beat of hesitation, and something flashes in his eyes. “I just…want you to know that.”

I’m not kissing her to feel something—I’m kissing her because she’s everything.
