The climate case for rethinking private ownership is particularly strong when it comes to natural gas, which is currently being touted by many governments as a “bridge fuel.” The theory is that, in the time it takes for us to make a full switch to zero carbon sources of energy, gas can serve as an alternative to dirtier fossil fuels like coal and oil. It is far from clear that this bridge is necessary, given the speed of the shift to renewables in countries like Germany.
