“I want to be with someone who chooses me. With the person who asked me to stay. I want to be that person for you, too. So stay with me, Em. Please.”
She was my home, but more than that, she was my shelter. She was my best friend and the only person I trusted wholly. Emma, Wherever you are, is where I’d want to be. Wherever you go, I’d happily follow. Whatever you do, I’d be right behind you. I sigh. Never done.
Our story wasn’t one of love at first sight. Though maybe it was a little for me. No, it was recognition at first sight. I saw him. And he saw me. Not as I was. Not as some diner waitress, but as me. He saw Emmaline with the gentle soul, and she saw Alexander, the warrior. The good man. It was yin and yang finding each other after years of loneliness and despair.
I see her for what I always thought she was. Not mine.
“I needed to do something unforgivable.” Maureen stares at me, waiting, unsatisfied with my answer. “I wanted to make sure she wouldn’t come back. Because Emma would have kept coming back to me. No matter how shitty I was, no matter how much I fucked up her life. She would have kept coming back, and I couldn’t let her do that. Couldn’t let her throw her life away.”
Perfect doesn’t exist. Not for her and me, not for anyone. It’s just a commitment you make and see it through. You commit the time and the energy, and you ride the highs and dig out of the lows.
“I miss you with every fiber of my being, Emma. I miss you while you lie beside me because I know you’re not mine. But I don’t hate that I miss you; sometimes missing you is the only thing that reminds me I’m still alive.”
