“I don’t know what’s happening with you, but if you need to do this assignment for your freedom, I’m willing to let you do it. I…” Her voice breaks, and so does my heart. “I don’t have anything to live for, but you do.”
Tobias frowns like a child just kicked his shin. “Of course she’s dead. Are your eyes working? Her brain is splattered on the ground, you fucking idiot.”
Oh, hey, kid. This guy here is a fuck-up and is basically dead inside. He has no idea where his soul is, and his heart is practically upside down and inside out. You see his face? Hideous. He’s killed hundreds and regrets only half of those deaths. He’s the monster that hides under your bed.
“Even if I’m a bag full of trauma?” I smile. “I have my own bag. We can swap when they get too heavy and we need a balance.”
“Because you’re going to be my wife. You’ve already taken my heart, my body, and my butchered soul, so you’ll take my fucking last name too.”
“No time for dramatics,” Tobias Mitchell says in a deep voice, standing above the dead body.
“I’m going to die a born-again virgin.”
“He asked you a motherfucking question, bitch. How did your husband taste?”
The devil trapped me, but I got myself out of her hold. She’s gone, and I’m fucking free.
It’s a sign that even when the world is in chaos, even when terror and havoc and death greet us at every turn, someone, somewhere, is having the best day of their life. It’s beautiful yet tragic. It’s hope of better things to come.
Kade Mitchell and Stacey Rhodes – the fifteen-year-olds who met by the pool twenty years ago – finally get to have their forever.
