“It’s just me and you. It’s always been me and you. Against the world.”
“I love you. I’ve loved you since we were eighteen. And I’ll love you until we’re old and grey and we’ve lived our whole lives together.”
Nothing about Kade scares me. Even if he did chase me down a highway on a motorbike and point a gun in my face, shoot at me, finger me while covered in blood, along with all the other messed-up things he’s done. He doesn’t scare me. That side – the scary, vicious and extremely dangerous side – is the one everyone sees, but I get to see a different Kade. The real Kade.
I look into the eyes of the only person I want to be with. He’s the only person I’ve ever wanted to be with. Kade Mitchell loves me. I’m his. And he’s mine.
“I want your heart, every single fucking fragment that I’ve broken over the years. I have your past and your present, and I want to be a selfish asshole and have your future.”
“You should be scared of me. I might worship the ground you walk on, but you don’t have the faintest idea what I’m capable of. I could snap your neck without blinking, mistaking you for a client. I could fuck you so hard you pass out. I could really hurt you, Stacey.”
“What will you do with your freedom?” Kade stares at me for a long moment, breathing the same air while I touch him through his clothes. “Win my girl back.”
“I’m going to make the world a safer place for you. Let me do this.”
“I love you,” I tell him, my voice cracking. “No matter what happens next, please know that.”
“If you try to push me away or force me to leave you, I’ll hate you.” “So you’d still be my girlfriend even if I’m in prison forever? That’s not a life you deserve.”
“I never want to hear that come out of your mouth again. Regardless of where we were in our relationship, I would have slaughtered an entire room filled with people just to get one minute of this with you.” “Cute – but a little scary. No more killing.”
“I love you,” I pant. “I’m going to prove to you every day for the rest of my life just how much I love you.”
“You’re everything I need and want. Don’t ever change. Got it?” I smile down at him. “Even when I complain?” “Not everyone is perfect.”
“Forever my addiction,” he mutters. “I’m obsessed with everything about you.”
I don’t think I’ve ever put myself first, because I had no future that looked pretty.
“Before anyone else, love yourself, Miss Rhodes. You cannot give your all to someone if you aren’t doing the same for yourself.”
Dad loved our family, despite struggling to understand the feeling. Tobias Mitchell fell in love with Aria Miller, and no one will ever understand the level of obsession he had for her.
Also, marry me? I have four hundred million in my bank. I can use that for a ring? Would that be enough? I know you don’t care about money but think of how fucking nice that diamond would be?
“All that power and control you had over him and he still never fell for you. His heart always belonged to someone else. Me.” I point to my chest and hit the bars in anger. “Fuck you for trying to take him away from me. You failed. You’ll always fail, because he’ll always be mine.”
“All I’ve ever wanted was you. When we first met, when we were eighteen and falling in love, and every moment after.”
“You make me feel alive, Stacey. I’ve been dead for such a long fucking time.”
“Thank you for saving me and being the dad I needed. Please stay safe.”
That makes me think of Jason, and my smile drops. So much loss, so many unsaid words – things I’ll never have the chance to tell him. He sacrificed himself for my girlfriend, for my happiness, and I’m going to make him proud by being what he always wanted me to be. Happy. I’m going to be fucking happy.
Tylar leans her elbows on the table, looking at him. “You’re terrified of harmless bugs, and you only drive small-engine cars because you don’t like going fast. And you do the dishes with an apron on because the water splashes make you feel sick. When they were training at the manor, you pretended to be asleep half the time when Base came to the door because you didn’t like fighting. What exactly would you have done?”
I have my entire life ahead of me, and I get to spend it with Kade Mitchell. I get to love and be with Kade Mitchell, and there’s nothing in our way.
“I love you,” he says, breathless from running after me. “I’ll love you for the rest of my life. I love you more than fucking anything, but I need you to walk to the porch.”
“We don’t have time to debate this. It’s done. You’re going to kiss me, then you’re going to go to your brother and go live your life. You’re going to dance. You’re going to fall asleep next to the dogs every night, and you’re going to be there for my sister and my niece or nephew. You’re going to live, Stacey. Fucking live for me.”
“Kade Mitchell,” she says, reaching up on her tiptoes and kissing me again. “Don’t you get it? You are my life.”
“I’m going to wait for you,” she tells me. “I’d wait forever for you.” I nod and let the first tear fall. “Forever, Freckles.”
“Then I guess we’re both dying. Because there isn’t a life for me without you.”
“Always fighting for me. I need to get out of here and make sure everyone knows you’re mine.” “The entire world knows I’m yours,” I say, rolling my eyes. “I would still like to claim my girl on the outside.”
“I hope you’re ready for the rest of our lives, Freckles.”
