“Don’t you fucking dare close your eyes, Base.”
We aren’t together – haven’t been for a while – but Stacey is my girl. Mine.
Hands grab at my face, forcing me to look up into the eyes of my new master. Tobias Mitchell.
“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. You’re okay. You’re safe with me,” he says softly as he strokes my hair, letting me cry into his chest. “I found you, little one.”
I was alive when I was around Kade. And now I’m alive because of his father.
“Sometimes I forget you’re an unfeeling idiot.”
“You can yell at me later. I did what I had to do for my family, and you” – he flicks my nose – “you are part of it.”
“We need to go. When we see someone, act scared. I need to hold you like I plan to fuck you in every position possible without your consent.” “Jesus, Tobias.”
“You did not need to pull my hair.” “I like pulling hair.” I roll my eyes. “Of course you do.”
“I’m… very uncomfortable acting this out,” he says, looking away and shoving his hands into his pockets. “I feel like I’m betraying my son and Aria.”
“I don’t think Aria will forgive me for this one, if I’m honest. I’ve probably lost her. She’ll hate me like the rest of the world.” He sighs again and pinches his nose. “But I had no other option; you didn’t show up for visitation. I had to escape.”
Barry tells us that the Russians are readying themselves to storm the manor; that within the hour, it’ll be up in flames. Hopefully the Sawyers burn. Even if their daughter is in the trunk.
I’m waiting for my world to end.
When I meet with Kade, he receives a clip of me and Jason, and everything falls apart. He yells at me. He hates me. He says I’m dead to him. He leaves me. He doesn’t answer me when I call or text, and when I try to call Jason, he declines.
I stare into the mist, the drop beneath me deadly but effective. All I need to do is step forward, and it all goes away. Chris can’t get me, because I’ll be dead. You’re fucking dead to me. I’m dead to me too. I’m not scared. It’ll make it all stop. I won’t be scared to go home. I can be with my baby girl.
No one loves me. I’m dead to everyone.
I don’t want to jump because Kade left me. I want to do it because I want to die.
“I lost my baby girl, and now I’ve lost him.”
Little did I know, when he helped me off the bridge and drove me home, that would be the last time I’d see him. He broke his promise and, along with Kade, vanished from my life in the process.
If Stacey ever lets me hold her hand again, will she feel all the death I’ve caused?
My girl. Even when faced with the worst kind of horror, she fucking fought. I didn’t think it was possible to love her more than I already do, but I do.
Me and four of their guys watched her be abused over and over while Archie made comments that resulted in me biting his ear off. One-eared Archie, the prick.
Just remember, baby Tobias, when you’re getting all the attention, I’m the naturally handsome one.”
He’s like the sun shining into a ditch full of dead bodies.
“No, but seriously. Stop being fucking vague. Tell me about your relationship with her. You never answer me when I ask shit. Stacey was pregnant, was raped, and you left her. Her dad died a few months later, right? How can you lie there and declare war on the world when you treated her like that?”
I disowned them both because of a lie.
We’ve been split up for three years now, and I don’t think I’ve ever stopped loving her. I don’t know how to not love her. Not a day goes by that I don’t despise myself for leaving her.
“The next time you see Stacey, you better apologise and promise never to be a cunt again.” “No shit,” I retort, my voice hollow. “I’ll fall to my knees and beg for forgiveness the next time I see her.”
“I’d rather die of an infection in my chest than behave for you. Wait, did you get even uglier? Unlucky, Archie-pops. I find shoving a bag over her face helpful when she’s being a greedy whore for my cock. You’re not very good at pleasing her, are you?”
“I’m not leaving you,” he refuses. “Not fucking happening. You die, I die, remember?”
“Sebastian,” Luciella sobs, her voice muffled, the sound of a car engine humming around her. “I… Oh God. I… I was only there because I got your text, and then – and then – and then…” She cries out and starts hyperventilating. It causes me to stand up, rage injecting strength into me once more. “I’m so scared. They… they locked me in a trunk.” The way her voice changes, I know she’s covering her mouth as the engine cuts off and a door opens. “I think they’re going to kill me. I never got the chance to tell you how I really feel. I… I’m so sorry… for pushing you away.”
“Blood is just that… blood. Meaningless.
“You need to assassinate one of them, Kade.” She opens the first one and pushes the file towards me. It opens, and my eyes widen as she says, “Your father.” She does the same with the next. A picture of Base. “Your best friend.” My eyes lift to her, and I glare as she opens the third. “Or your lover.”
I won’t be there – once I do this, there’ll be no reason for me to live.
“Do you always do that?” he asks. I tilt my head. “Do what?” “Ignore your own demons to cater to everyone else’s? From what I’ve witnessed, you seem to run after those around you, be there for them, centre yourself in their trauma, and no one seems to do the same for you.”
He tells Tobias that Luciella was taken but is with them again, that she’s safe and will be on a jet home soon. But only because Base gave up his entire life to save her.
“When I find that piece of shit, I’ll be the one to skin him alive and make him eat his own flesh.” “That’s a bit inhumane, don’t you think?”
When I slowly walk across the landing, holding the doorframe, I look in to see Tobias and Aria… slow dancing?
In another life, they would make the perfect couple, but in this one, they love each other so dangerously there’s no chance of ever being together.
“Kade?” “Stand up.” Frowning, I look around the room. “What?” “I said…” He pauses as I hear metal clanking. A gun loading? “Stand the fuck up.” My legs fail me, and so does my voice. My entire body stiffens when I see the red dot shining against the door. He’s aiming into the room? What is he doing? My lips move, but no sound comes out. “Stand up,” he snaps. “I won’t tell you again.” “No,” I croak, my face twisting. Is this really happening? “Are you scared?” he whispers, amusement in his voice. But I don’t reply. I can’t. “You know the best part about accepting kill contracts? It’s the chase.
...more
Maybe all the drugs he’s consumed, the deaths he’s brought about and the abuse he’s endured have finally destroyed the Kade we all once knew.
“Don’t underestimate me, Stacey. I’m not the stupid little boy who fell in love with you. Run, and I’ll come find you. This is my final warning. Stay, and I’ll kill them all. That’s a promise.”
I was in love with Kade Mitchell, and now he’s going to kill me.
Pulling that trigger and the way I spoke to her… she’s never going to forgive me. All I want is her forgiveness.
