You’re safe with me,” he says softly as he strokes my hair, letting me cry into his chest. “I found you, little one.”
“Why are you thanking me?” I throw my arms out. “I accepted that I was going to die. I thought I was—” I stop, nearly choking. “Just accept my gratitude. I know your children are your priority, but I appreciate that you’re here for me.” “You are also my priority. I would have always hunted for you to the ends of the fucking earth, little one. I know you didn’t have the best relationship with your father, your brothers are useless pricks, and my son is shackled to a bitch on an insane power trip, but you have me.”
I think I might be in shock. I was in love with Kade Mitchell, and now he’s going to kill me.
Pulling that trigger and the way I spoke to her… she’s never going to forgive me. All I want is her forgiveness.
She’ll run. After the threat I made about killing everyone, she’ll run. That girl will never risk everyone’s safety. She’s insufferable like that – always putting others before herself.
“Kade? Are you there?” Can she hear how uneven my breathing is? If I talk, I’ll fuck this up. She’ll know I’m upset. She’s met with my silence. “I don’t know what’s happening with you, but if you need to do this assignment for your freedom, I’m willing to let you do it. I…” Her voice breaks, and so does my heart. “I don’t have anything to live for, but you do.”
Stacey Rhodes. My girl. My anchor that sank to the bottom of the ocean without me.
“Going after the Sawyers isn’t a good idea. Trust me, I’ve been trying to get Kade away from this from the start. You’ll only put a target on his back if you insert yourself.” He scoffs. “You expect me to do nothing while my son is being fucking drugged and raped?” Everyone flinches at his truthful words.
Having her so close makes me want to fucking live. I haven’t wanted to live for such a long, shitty time.
“Give me the gun,” Tobias says, noticing he’s still gripping it harshly, his finger resting on the trigger. Kade’s fingers twitch around the gun, but his eyes slide to me, and he gives in. Resting the weapon in Tobias’s palm, Kade lowers his head, not pushing away as his father pulls him by the helmet again and pats his back harshly. “It’s you and me, son,” Tobias says, low enough that it’s a whisper, but I’m close enough to hear. “You’re not doing this by yourself anymore. I’m here. I’m not letting you do this alone. You and me, you hear me?”
“Don’t be afraid of me, Freckles,” he calls, spitting out blood that’s leaked into his mouth. “This is for us.”
“I want you to know that it’ll be me who kills you. Kade might have caused you all the pain you deserved, but it will be me who ends your life.” I harshly slice to the right, the sharp edge of the blade cutting through skin, flesh and muscle. Blood hits my face, mixing with my tears. “I hate you, Chris. And if by some miracle you make it to heaven, I hope my mother kicks your ass. If not…” I lean forward to whisper in his ear as the gurgling stops. “I’ll see you in hell.”
“Moya vechnost.”
The dickhead one leans forward with a smirk. “Are you aware that there’s a very large price on your head?” I nod once. “Here to chance your luck?
Do you know why?” She blinks, more trails of tears sliding down her cheeks. “Because you’re going to be my wife. You’ve already taken my heart, my body, and my butchered soul, so you’ll take my fucking last name too.”
Dad tilts his head. “How did he taste?” She glares at him, weak, then glances down at the plate. Her eyes lift to me. Base steps forward. “He asked you a motherfucking question, bitch. How did your husband taste?”
“You make me feel alive, Stacey. I’ve been dead for such a long fucking time.”
kisses me like we might die tomorrow.
He sacrificed himself for my girlfriend, for my happiness, and I’m going to make him proud by being what he always wanted me to be. Happy. I’m going to be fucking happy.
“So beautiful, even when you cry, my Freckles.
