Have you spent any of that money yet?” Chewing my lip, I shake my head, but then I stop. “I bought a coffee from Starbucks the other day. I felt bad though.” “You have eight-six million in your bank and you felt bad for buying a coffee?” “Hey, I said from the start I wasn’t going to spend a penny!” “Was it at least a large coffee?” “No, the large wasn’t worth the money.” “You are the worst visitor I’ve ever had in my life.” “Yet I’m still your favourite.”
If I’m not here, he calls me on his secret phone. Sometimes I’m not able to answer, but his obsessive side makes him continuously call until I pick up. I know he doesn’t mean to be overbearing, so I try to be as patient as possible with him.
“I’ll be back later tonight, but I have a hair appointment tomorrow, so I can’t come,” I say, leaning my cheek on my palm, elbow on the table as I swing my legs. “Think you can handle a day without me?” “Could you handle a day without me?”
“Do you think I’ve spent the last twenty-two years doing nothing? If I wanted to leave, I could be out of here within the hour.”
“I’ll bring you chocolates and popcorn for our movie tonight,” I say. “Remember to keep me a seat!”
“We have an emergency announcement. Reports say that Tobias Mitchell has escaped his institution this afternoon and is currently at large. The murderer and psychopath was given a life sentence over twenty years ago.”
The father I always wanted, needed and will keep forever, regardless of my position with his son.
Was the baby his? I never got round to asking.” “She was a girl and I was sixteen weeks pregnant. And you killed her.” He laughs. “I saved you the hassle of raising a child so young. Really, Stacey, what were you thinking? Mum wouldn’t have ever stood for it. She would have told you to get an abortion. I just made it easier for you.” “I hope Kade crushes your skull when he finds you.”
“I can’t wait until you’re in prison, or even better – dead.” “You’d be devastated, don’t lie.” Sarcasm fills my tone as I say, “My heart breaks thinking about all the peace I’d get.”
“We have an emergency announcement. Reports say that Tobias Mitchell has escaped his institution.”
“What would you have done if I actually wanted you, the baby was yours, and someone beat me up because it wasn’t theirs and it died?” His eyes turn dark. “I would kill them.” I nod. “I should’ve told Kade what was happening. He would have protected our child – that’s on me. But I can’t wait until Kade gets his revenge on you. You took his daughter from him, and even if he doesn’t care about me anymore, he’ll torture you for that.
“Let’s assume Kade does get his hands on me,” he says as he follows me with our bags. “Would you help him, Stacey?” I throw my head back and laugh. “He’s the son of Tobias Mitchell. He doesn’t need help.”
“Kade is on screen twelve. Top-right corner.”
“It’s been four years since I started falling for him. I know he might not care for me, but I will always love him.”
