Strangely, it was the hat box that caused the greatest sneer, despite it actually carrying a hat. For over a year it carried something a modicum less pleasant: the monkey’s head Maxwell sent me.

I wrote a letter to his brother, Evelyn, the month after I’d received the news of what had happened. It wasn’t long, and I only asked one question. How was it possible for someone to suddenly be lost to this world? He never answered the question.

While there are many things beyond our control, I’ve always thought the cruellest is that we mortals are not told when our last glance is just that.
