You’re sunshine and darkness all rolled into one,”
She laughs. “It’s fine. I’m used to rejection.” “You’re not fling material. You’re the type of woman that men want forever with.”
He sighs. “If it will make you more comfortable, but you have to promise to stay on your side of the bed and keep your hands to yourself.” I make a face. “You expect me to control dream me?” “You’ll have to or I’ll move to the couch.” “Fine.” I huff, closing my eyes tight and pressing my pointer fingers into my temples. “What are you doing?” I meet his gaze. “Telling my tequila drunk subconscious to behave, per your instruction.” The sound of his laughter is my reward.
“Falling in love with me wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen to you, would it?” “No. Losing you would,”
“Whoa, whoa, whoa,” her dad says. “Where are your manners, Autie? This is why we should’ve raised her in Texas. This attitude wouldn’t exist.”
“What shall we toast to tonight?” I swirl the golden liquid around the edges of the crystal. “To your exes.” My brows furrow He continues, “For not realizing what they had.”
A man strolls past us and stares at me, but I ignore it. Zane blocks me from view. “I don’t like anyone looking at you like that.” I turn to him. “Jealous?” “Mm. No. I know who you belong to.”
“Have you? If I recall, I had to threaten you with jail to befriend me. I can’t imagine how you’d act had I mentioned wanting to date you. Actually, I can. I bet you would’ve told me to get fucked.” A small smile touches my lips. “Probably.” “You’re fucking adorable.” He boops my nose, then wraps his arm around me. “Let’s go inside.”
There is an unexplainable spark with a deeply rooted sense of understanding. “Tell me one of your secrets,” I say as we stroll down the sidewalk that leads to the five-star restaurant. “Hmm,” he ponders, glancing over at me. “You’re the first person I’ve ever shared a soul connection with.” “A soul connection,” I repeat. “That’s one way to describe it.”
There is an invisible rope that always pulls us together. The odd sense of familiarity, like I’ve always known him. We’re strangers, I remind myself. Perfect strangers. “It’s undeniable,” he admits. It’s not one sided, even if I try to convince myself otherwise.
He gives me a smile and pulls me in close, nuzzling his face into my hair as he inhales. “I’d dance with you in Hell,” he admits. “You’re so damn beautiful.”
My pretty girl falls into my chest and I hold her tight against me. She sniffles and I pet her hair, trying to comfort her in the only way I know how, by being here, by being close.
Not under his gaze, not when he smiles at me like the man in my dreams. I crave him like I crave cooler weather, bonfires, and crunchy leaves.
My head falls back on my shoulders as I laugh, not even embarrassed. “I can’t imagine what else you know about me.” “A lot,” he admits. “You’re a good person. An American sweetheart. Everyone truly loves you and how kind you are, even if you pretend like you’re a hard-ass. You genuinely care about people and that means something. It can’t be replicated,”
“And what if all I want is you?” I finally say. He pulls away, meeting my eyes. “You have me.”
“Oh, I’m aware. Just glad I found someone who understands that life is too short to drink shitty coffee.
I do want to make you my wife. To take the risk. I want the whole goddamn world to know you’re mine, and more than anything, I want to take care of you and go on adventures with you. I’m already bound to you, somehow. And I don’t understand it at all, but in my heart, it’s you. It will only ever be you.”
“See, honey? That’s the way you used to look at me.” They exit and I chuckle. “How do I look at you?” “Like . . . you’d figure out a way to rope the moon if I wanted it.”
“Thank you for loving me,” she whispers. “Thank you for allowing me to.” I hold her tighter, never wanting to let her go.
“Is my butt hanging out or something?” Autumn whispers, glancing behind her. I look too. “Nah, your ass of mass destruction is put away.”
Perspective makes old things seem new again.
