I can’t shake him because he’s the man of my dreams in the goddamn flesh.
“You feel the invisible tug. I know you do. It’s written on your face.”
“I don’t like the way you’re speaking to my fucking girlfriend.”
“Are you dating someone?” she asks. “Other than you?” I shoot her a wink. “No. My ex broke me too.”
It shouldn’t feel like this. It shouldn’t feel like home. It shouldn’t feel like I want to do this again and again and again.
I’ll visit you in butterfly flutters. I promise.
“I’m afraid of growing attached then having to navigate a world without knowing you.”
You’re sunshine and darkness all rolled into one,” I say.
“Falling in love with me wouldn’t be the worst thing to happen to you, would it?” “No. Losing you would,” he says. “Good night.”
“You’re the first person I’ve ever shared a soul connection with.”
“The heir of Xander Resorts and Enterprises. A total asshole. I’m also a brother. A son. A kick-ass friend. Oh, and a damn good lover.”
Life is too fucking short to be in awkward or annoying situations.”
Autumn tilts her head at me, noticing how I tense. It isn’t my place to say anything, however, guilt creeps over me.
It’s how I caught my fiancée with my best friend.
“At the end of the ski season, we always give our celebrity instructors a two-week all-inclusive stay at the private island resort as a thank-you. For the past decade, Sebastian has brought a different woman with him. None of them were ever you.” “Every year?” Her voice cracks and her jaw tightens.
“And what if all I want is you?” I finally say. He pulls away, meeting my eyes. “You have me.”
“Was just kissing my future husband.”
That’s great, then. I did talk to him after you two left.” She hesitates. “He seems to be very much in love with you still. But I told him he was shit out of luck because my brother was marrying you.”
“But you’ll say yes and it will be the greatest thing that’s ever happened to you. You’re his queen, the only woman who can sit beside him, not only as his wife, but as his equal. You’ve been waiting for confirmation that he’s the man in your dreams. He is and always has been. Twin flames. Mirrored souls.”
“This is my mother’s ring. I had Weston help me resize it for you.”
“No. She just reminded you of who you truly are.”
“And if it doesn’t work, I’ll be your Ghostbuster.”
It was so vivid. The two of you were married on the mountain, at the little chapel on the outlook. It was your favorite season. I remember how orange the leaves were.
