In Memoriam

“You’re not afraid of dying, Henry. You’re just opposed to killing. That isn’t cowardice.”

“I feel…as if I’ve woken up,” said Gaunt one day, when they were alone in a field. (He and Gaunt were somehow always alone in fields.)

The Hague Convention sought to make war more humane. We had reached a point in history where we believed it was possible to make war humane.

Gaunt had closed his eyes. His face lost its hardened-captain look. He was only eighteen again.

This truly haunted me.
