Even in democracies, most politicians only pretended to care about their constituencies, preferring to brainwash and manipulate to get votes rather than to actually accomplish anything.

Absent feedback to the contrary, an honorable man expects others to be just as honorable as he is. A corrupt man expects others to be just as corrupt.
