On Wednesday, August 20, Roger had blood transfused, about three units, as I recall. Though the white count is most consistently affected by AZT, the red count is also a problem. Many full-blown AIDS patients on long-term AZT have become transfusion-dependent. They have also gotten fairly blasé about the vampire part; but we still thought of transfusion as a grave and unsettling procedure.
