Within the sea, Esmyra was stealth incarnate—a wraith beneath the tides.
She always felt that the monster was more so something inside of her. Something she couldn’t necessarily control, just waiting to break free.
Because the truth was, she wasn’t sure where Esmyra ended and the siren began anymore. The lines had blurred over the last few centuries.
How did you punish a being who already felt trapped and alone?
“I’m not the heir to the sea, Captain.” She paused as his eyes flared, his brows slowly creasing. “I am the sea. The storm. The depths. The monster within.”
It was as if her beauty alone could beckon any man to her—combine that with her voice that more resembled a poisonous honey, and she was absolutely…lethal.
Perhaps sailors didn’t desire women aboard their ship, not because it was bad luck, but because they were entirely too cunning.
Draevyn had never balked before a foe, never yielded. Yet, Esmyra was the only being he’d ever come across who had his body yearning to kneel.
“You see her as a monster. I’m the person who’s made sure that’s not what she becomes. A friend.”
Perhaps I’ll slice a piece off your shirt and stuff it down your throat.”
“Or perhaps you could just take off your own and use that. I wouldn’t fight that as hard.”
The Phoenix and the siren moved as one, their powers creating a deadly dance.
“Touch her and you’ll fucking burn.”
“You’re really fun when you’re angry, you know that?”
“You’re really irritating when you’re breathing, you know that?”
“There’s the siren I know. Fear doesn’t suit you, love.”
“You’re a crucial piece of this kingdom’s legacy, a piece of the puzzle we have been missing. Your powers, unshackled, could set us free.”
“You are the key to breaking our chains.”
So many lies have been spoken regarding our kingdom. Truth lost in destroyed texts while lies were whispered above the tides.
Amidst a lifetime of isolation, she finally met someone who understood her—understood that dark loneliness.
“What say you, Esmyra Aeress…”
“Will you help me save our people?”
“This is my chance to prove I’m not the monster everyone believes me to be. This is my chance to do something good.”
What Draevyn hadn’t told her was that, with each passing moment, he understood who she was.
“If you train with her, then also train with me,” he breathed, his eyes searching hers as she turned to face him.
“You’re beautiful, and insane, and the best possible choice I could’ve made that night.”
“Such a little thief you are, Wildfire.” That name.
“All my life, all I’ve ever wanted was the truth. And it seems to be the only thing I never fucking get.”
“Fuck it.”
don’t care if the entire godsdamn castle hears you screaming for me, Wildfire.”
“I’m coming. I swear on every wretched fucking god who has hurt you, I’m coming for you.”
Esmyra vowed to herself that she would no longer be a tool for others to use or a weapon for them to wield. A being of divine and ancient power, she would unleash a millennium’s worth of fury
