What I think now is: People are amazing. It was true, people were capable of the most unbelievable measurements. People made springs and closures and hinges. They multiplied by pi to find the diameter. They cut seats for sapphires smaller than glints. The terrifying aspect was not that it was impossible, it was that you started to see how they could do it. Was everything this way? Could I have learned Greek?
