I let the idea of Lincoln Matthews go before, and I can do it again.
Just because someone is your blood doesn’t mean they’re good for you. It doesn’t mean they have to be in your life when all they do is cause pain.
Emotion wells in my throat as the sad realization settles in my bones. I can’t imagine sharing a life with someone, having so many plans for the future, only to end up losing them. To go from thinking you have your whole life planned out and to have it ripped away from you completely. To go from having someone with you every day of your life to never seeing them again.
“Some people are worth the risk, Lincoln. You just have to decide who you want to take that chance with.”
At first, she didn’t want to date anyone. I think the experience with Darren really scared her off. Riley is the type of girl who wants to be brought home to meet a guy’s family. She doesn’t want to be a fling or to only share a passing moment. She wants to be someone’s everything.
As much as I wish we were written in the stars, we aren’t. Lincoln will always be like the moon—so close, yet just out of my reach.
Nova Simmons is the only one I want to occupy my time—even if it’s just as friends.
All I have to do is make sure Posey grows up always knowing she was worth it. She is worth every sacrifice I have to make.
“While you’ve been counting stars and studying the phases of the moon, I’ve been studying you—only
“I always tried to keep my distance out of respect for your brother, but you’ve always been the only person I see. In a crowded room or in an empty one, it’s always you, Nova. You’re a permanent fixture inside my mind.”
“Bullshit,” she scoffs. “You’re fucking sexy as hell and independent. You’re a badass single mom who is out here doing it by herself. You don’t need anyone, and he knows that.”
“You never know when it might be too late.” He pauses for a second, tucking his hands into the front pockets of his trousers. “You don’t want to live with the regret of not saying something.”
“They’re not pretty,” she says quietly as she rolls her throat once more. “I know there’s so much sentiment behind them. I grew a baby in my stomach, so it’s expected. But sometimes I look at them, and I just feel gross.”
“I can’t live my life hoping he might feel the same way as me. You know I want more than fleeting moments with someone.”
“Have you said anything to him about it?” I raise an eyebrow at her. “About what? My feelings?” “Yes, that is what people do,” she says, rolling her eyes before giving me a knowing look. “When adults have feelings, they discuss them.”
There was a point where I decided Lincoln Matthews was worth the risk. The consequences to my heart are worth the moments we’ve shared.
“You’re crazy if you think I was going to watch someone put their hands on you and not do anything about it.”
You’re a forever kind of love, Nova. Your love is soft and slow, yet it creeps into your heart in unsuspecting ways, until you’re nestled deep within the fibers of someone’s soul. I never stood a chance against you,
