To those who search for magic. Here’s the secret—it’s already inside you. You are enough.
In the doorway stood my enemy. But tonight I needed him. To fight a monster, I needed a monster.
“Precious?” he murmured, that one word dripping with fury. Maybe it was my sanity failing with my life, but it didn’t sound as if his ire was directed at me. For once. “Who hurt you?”
“I could absolutely be a spellcaster. I mean, the rarest, most powerful of magic, where I can literally draw on the energy of the world itself for near limitless power.”
From the age of four, I’d collected gems and crystals like it was my life calling. Shelves in my room were filled with my obsession, and if there had been a crystal witch affinity, I’d be set.
Alice cleared her throat, looking uncomfortable. “You’re not making it up. Logan looked exactly like that, and you two were inseparable. Even though he’s Trevor’s age, he just gravitated toward you and was überprotective.”
“I don’t remember you,” I said flatly. “I was only four when we were—” “Torn apart?” he suggested.
Alliances were everything in our world. Weatherstone gave you the connections you needed to have a future.
“My motto in life is Never Go Hungry.
“It’s called fantasy for a reason. I like to escape.” “Yeah, into all of those spicy scenes,”
Oh my goddesses. “I’m going to kill you,” I muttered from the corner of my mouth. “And then find a necro to resurrect you so I can kill you again.” She snorted, before coughing to cover her laughter. “Come on, we might as well make him useful. And we both know you’re desperate to find your affinity.”
“Siblings are put on this Earth to break us down to our foundation, forcing us to rebuild ourselves into a stronger version. It’s how the species survives.”
“You come here pretending to have no affinity, to barely have power, and then you touch all the elements in one class. Are you a spellcaster?”
Also . . . stop calling me Precious. Where the fuck did you even get that from?” The light green of his eyes briefly flickered darker, that mossy ring expanding. “Precious Gem. You don’t remember?” Gem. “My dad is the only one who calls me Gem,” I whispered,
scent of mint and power
“You guys went all enemies-to-lovers. Haley will be fucking thrilled.”
Her passion for books was one of my favorite parts of her personality.
“Blessed be to those who walk these sacred halls. Blessed are their lives outside these walls. Blessed are their magics.”
“It’s like electricity,” I said in awe. “Everything is buzzing.” He nodded. “When your spellcaster abilities are fully unlocked, that’s how you’ll feel all the time. Like you’re plugged into the world’s energy.”
