In the doorway stood my enemy. But tonight I needed him. To fight a monster, I needed a monster.
“Precious?” he murmured, that one word dripping with fury. Maybe it was my sanity failing with my life, but it didn’t sound as if his ire was directed at me. For once. “Who hurt you?”
“Repeat after me, we don’t fuck bad boys.” Belle opened her mouth, and then slammed it shut. “Sorry, I can’t. My programming is preventing me from lying.”
Those of us who find an affinity in the energy of the dead, cross planes of existence to discover more questions than answers usually. It’s not an affinity for those who settle, but for those who seek beyond the norm.
I have magic! It was there, but it was caged. I hadn’t found the right key yet.
“Trying to kill yourself before I get the chance, Precious?”
“Breathe, Precious.”
“I abhor liars.”
Expecting more anger, all I got was a slow smile as he played with the ends of my ponytail, running it through his fingers. “If I wanted to murder you, Precious, you’d be dead.”
“Walter was taken care of long ago, and if Noah wanted to hurt you, you’d be in much less—” he eyed the long expanse of leg exposed by my shorts “—pristine condition. So, I repeat, Precious, who the fuck hurt you?”
On the moonstone she’d penned: Don’t use in the height of the moon, because the power is too great. The amethyst stated: Strongest when teamed with aquamarine, for true power boost. The jade: Deadly to those who wish you harm. The agate: Will call strongest.
“Excuse the fuck out of me? He has tatts too. Unfair. We should riot.”
In the doorway stood my enemy. But tonight I needed him. To fight a monster, I needed a monster.
“Breathe, Precious. Breathe through the pain.”
“Your life has been in my hands for years, and I’m not ready for it to end yet.”
“You want my power like this, Precious?” he asked. His power. Him. Every fucking part of the spellcaster. “I need it,” I admitted.
“You guys went all enemies-to-lovers. Haley will be fucking thrilled.”
“The kind who’s mentally deranged because you’re not my best friend.”
He waved me off. “I’ll ignore those hurtful words for now, but I expect an apology when your memories return.” What the fuck was he talking about?
It also hadn’t slipped my attention that he’d said nice to put a face to the name and not nice to meet you.
“You keep saying witch,” I said, still meeting his dark stare unflinchingly. “Do the elders have a suspect?”
“Nice of you to join us, Precious,” he drawled. “We were just discussing you.”
“If you wanted me in your dorm to finish what we started the other night, you only had to ask, Precious. No need to make up stories about monsters.”
“My eyes are up here, Precious,” he drawled.
“Is it weird that I’ve always wanted a cat?” Belle’s lips twitched. “Girl, you can just get a cat. You know that, right? It’s a normal pet.”
“Why did you not go to school here as a freshman?” His chuckle was dark. “Amusing that you think anything in my life is my choice. I’m the dutiful son. Born to tragedy, and I’ll no doubt die the same way.”
“It can’t be that fucking hard of a question. What happened when I was four and you were six?” He stepped into me. “Your dreams haven’t told you?”
“I remember falling in the rain. I remember you standing over me.” My words were short. Blunt. “Do you remember the ceremo—?”
“I think it’s you, Precious.”
With each jab, another beast appeared until we were surrounded. Completely surrounded by monsters, and I was forced to acknowledge that the only enemy I faced here tonight was . . . myself?
This was a beacon of power in a school of magic. Everyone would want in on
Which was impossible. We could connect and elevate power, but he couldn’t steal mine unless I freely gave it to him—I didn’t remember anyone asking permission.
“You called me, sweetheart,” she whispered, her lips
“Demon-witch,” I murmured. Demon-witch. I knew that term. I knew that fucking term. Witch massacre. From their own kind.
“Paisley belongs to me. You know that, and I’ll kill anyone that takes her from me.”
“One month,” he countered. “I’ll give you one month and then I’m coming for you, Precious.”
I’ll kill anyone that takes her from me. He’d given us one month, and I was determined that by then I’d know everything I needed to know about demon-witches. Demon-witches and the monsters they called.
