Altman was considering a few different scenarios: one could be transitioning OpenAI to a traditional for-profit; the other would be transitioning it to a for-profit public benefit corporation like Anthropic and xAI. Both scenarios would retain the existence of the nonprofit as a separate entity but dismantle its board’s control over the company’s business.
