Altman was considering a few different scenarios: one could be transitioning OpenAI to a traditional for-profit; the other would be transitioning it to a for-profit public benefit corporation like Anthropic and xAI. Both scenarios would retain the existence of the nonprofit as a separate entity but dismantle its board’s control over the company’s business. Under this new structure, investors were also pressuring Altman to take equity in the company to align his incentives more directly with their own.
