Good = self sacrifice? Not necessarily. (No self sacrifice then not good?)
Good can be many other virtues that don’t require self sacrifice.
Also, note that if protagonist is so smart and useful to society, then he is depriving society of his value by self sacrificing.
Overall, this whole section is a lot of self congratulatory.
