“How can I be late, Minthe, when I abide by no one’s schedule but my own?”
Aphrodite’s magic—sea salt and roses—and
“There is nothing more dangerous than a bored Aphrodite,” Hades mused.
Make someone fall in love with you.
A soul for a soul.
sweetness of vanilla and a mild, herbal note of lavender.
She is yours, a voice echoed in his head, and something inside him snapped. Claim her.
The mortal was a liar and had a heart as dark as the Styx, but he supposed the Goddess of Love had a hard time looking past his pretty face.
Hades peeled back layer after layer of glamour that kept his vision shielded from the ethereal Threads of Fate. They were like shimmering spiderwebs connecting people and things—some were wisps, others were solid. Their strength waxed and waned throughout life. The whole floor was like a net, but Hades was only focused on one, fragile cord that ran from his chest to the woman in shimmering pink.
“You make it too easy,” the gorgon replied. “Lay off the cologne.”
“What troubles you, my king?” she asked as he approached. “Is it Minthe? May I suggest lye to remedy the situation? It is quite painful when swallowed.”
“You must tell Minthe you are to wed when I am present. She will be furious!”
“With your track record? No. You tend to forget what is beneath the skin.”
“I also tend to have mind-blowing sex,” Hermes said, sighing. “It is a sacrifice I’m willing to make.”
he peered beneath her fair exterior and saw her soul for what it was—a powerful goddess, caged in doubt and fear.
Keep her safe,
“Encouraging her,” Minthe said. “If you aren’t careful, she’ll fall in love with you.”
“Says the goddess who started a war over an apple,” Hades snapped. “Where is she?”
“Let me be clear,” he said fiercely. “You bargained, and you lost. There is no way out of our contract unless you fulfill its terms. Otherwise, you remain here. With me.”
My lover, he thought. My wife, my queen.
“Darling, don’t pretend you weren’t watching me. I know your gaze upon me like I know the weight of my horns.”
But Persephone, she had the ability to create life. Real life. He could sense it within her, the powerful core of her being, caged by disbelief. There would come a day when flowers would bloom in her presence, when her breath would call the wind, when her tears would turn to storms. She would shake the earth and build kingdoms from the rubble. And he would stand by and watch—a husband, her king.
“I want you inside me,” she said. “Fuck me, say my name as you come. Dream of me, and only me, for the rest of eternity.”
Take her, and I will destroy this world. Take her, and I will destroy you. Take her, and I will end us all.
“Bah! I should not expect you to be vulnerable, though I do wish you happiness.”
