Hades was a god and he owned the shadows.
“I love my wife,” he said. “I’m just looking for sex.” “Is that all?” She batted her lashes and then spoke in a voice veiled with darkness and strong with promise. “In that case, when you return to your wife this evening, she will no longer desire you. She will cringe at your touch and gag when your lips touch hers. She will refuse you, she will leave you, and you will never recover.”
“I will answer it.” He met her gaze, challenging. “If you will answer a question for me.” Say yes, he silently begged, though he would never compel her. Say yes so I can learn all of you.
“What? Undress you? Happily, and with far more enthusiasm than you realize, my lady.”
“Thank you, Hermes, for saving Persephone.”
“Trust that I am devastated that you were hurt in my realm.”
He grinned. “They grow lazy under your care, Hecate.” And fat. She liked to feed them.
Clearly, this was amusing for her, and he groaned internally. The things he did for her already.
“You are a goddess. You will sit on a throne.” Those words were similar to what he was really thinking. You will be my wife and queen. You will sit on a throne.
“If the first, you risk the wrath of Demeter,” he said. “If the second, you risk my wrath.” “You are asking me to do the impossible.” “No,” he said. “I am asking you, which of us do you fear more?”
“Chains of Truth, Hades?” she asked, raising a brow. “Thanatos, what do you think of Hades’s hair?” The God of Death’s eyes widened in fear, and when he spoke, it was like the words had been torn from his throat. “It’s a mess. A complete contradiction to his pristine appearance.” Hecate’s smile widened, and Hades glared at the two.
This is torture, Hades thought.
“Trust me, darling. I’m aware.” “I’m not yours, and I’m not your darling.”
Oh, darling, he thought. If you only knew how I worship you now.
“Tell me you want me.” He needed to hear her say it, because he had not completely told the truth. Words did matter, and the only ones he had heard since the night before were the ones she’d spoken on the steps of the baths. I don’t want you. “I want you.”
as sleep descended upon Hades, he had the thought that he would tear this world apart if anyone tried to take Persephone from him.
“I don’t think I could handle your regret.”
Darling, he wanted to say. You are the only woman in my mind
He was not doing a good job focusing on the words coming out of her mouth. The only one he really heard was we, and she kept using it. He wanted to use it, too. We should go to bed. We should make love for hours.
“Plan your ball, Lady Persephone.” “Come home soon, Lord Hades.”
Beside him was Artemis, to her great dismay, as no one got along with Ares. Her throne was simple, a gold-toned half-moon. Beside her sat Apollo, whose seat mimicked the sun’s rays in the form of a glimmering aureole circling behind him.
“Hades does not know the difference between attention and love.” “Do you speak from experience, Aphrodite?” Hades challenged.
“Come to apologize?” he asked her. “Fuck you,” she replied. “He’s done that,” Hermes commented, sidling past them, white wings dragging the ground. He looked ridiculous, bare chested, wearing only a gold shroud over his waist. “It must not have been very good, because I don’t believe he ever went back.”
“Hecate, the nymph is breakable,” Hermes reminded. “I know,” she responded deviously.
“Am I dreaming?” “I need your…help,” Hades said. “I am dreaming.” Hermes slapped his face.
She deserves loyalty and freedom and power.” “And you think you can give her that? King of Death and Darkness?” “I think she can take it for herself,”
