His nostrils flared, his jaw working. “I can’t help it if he doesn’t want to live.”
But I knew Fisher, and he didn’t give a shit about disrespecting the Sanasrothian court. He wanted to look me in the eyes when he spoke to me.
The snowcapped mountains, the forest, the frozen river… those places are my home. You are home.”
My heart…” He swallowed, giving a tiny shake of his head. “I’ve killed more people than I can count. I lost the parts of myself that knew how to feel anything other than pain and sorrow centuries ago. But for better or worse, you have brought me back to life.”
mine. I had stilled the air in the bedroom, but Fisher stilled my soul.
Suddenly, the glass in my hand became brand new.
I could be dead in the ground five thousand years and the frosts could have taken my bones, and still no other male will ever have loved another female the way that I love you.”
Saeris wasn’t here. But if she was, this is what she would have done for him.
“My soul is on the winds,” I panted. “You’re carrying it away.”
“When I look at you, I feel as though I’m peering into a mirror,” he said quietly. “I can speak into your mind, but it’s still a mystery to me. I feel as if I should already know your every thought.”

“You’ll have to face the sun for me, too, in that case,” she mused. “Gladly.” “And I will become your shadow.” I held on to her a little tighter, needing to feel her close. “You should know, Saeris… I am my father’s son. My strength has always been my shadows.”
I’m here now, and just because I am your mate and you are mine doesn’t mean that I expect you to sit around looking pretty, or… or put down your weapons and adopt a different way of life. I would never want that for you. But you don’t have to be one thing here, Saeris. You can be many things. You can wear your leathers and fight every day of the year. I would never ask you not to. But sometimes, if you wanted to… you’re allowed to soften, Saeris. You’re allowed to stop baring your teeth at the world and take a breath. Because I’ve got you.”
