The only time a member of the Sanasrothian Court gave off any scent at all was after they had fed, when the spark of life that lingered in their victim’s blood still echoed with the emotions they had felt as they died.
“And the day you save me on a battlefield, I’ll put on a dress and dance a fucking jig.”
But this was nothing like that. This… was two stars colliding. The end of everything and the beginning at the same time.
“Come now, Osha. Where else would an acolyte kneel to worship but at the altar of his god?”
“Apologies, madam. We had a little argument with gravity. Looks like gravity won.”
“Oh, I don’t have an account, Lord Cahlish.” He winked at me. “I own it.”
“Isn’t beer supposed to be hot?”
There was also some consideration for the idea that the harder you had to work for the knowledge you were seeking, the more you had earned the right to benefit from it.
All libraries contained magic.
Because what was a book, if not a portal into another realm, another time, another life even.
I’ll face your nightmares if I have to, and I will still be the most frightening thing prowling around in the dark.”
“Where there is light, there is always darkness, shadow weaver. To kill a queen, you will need to visit the darkest of all places. You will need to strike a deal far more costly than this one if you hope to succeed. And the beast who lies in wait for you there will not be so easy to trick as me. She will eat you whole, shadow weaver!”
“Umm. Yeah, I kinda need my tongue.” He took a deep breath and then sighed it back out. “People do seem to like it.”
Thank the gods, I chanted in my head. Thank the fucking gods. Don’t thank them, came Fisher’s low, resonant reply. Thank me. I’m the one who’s about to make you scream.
“To fall asleep within a dream is to commune with the gods.”
It was louder than it had been since Gillethrye.
When you had no one else to lean on, you relied on yourself.
Save yourself now, Saeris. You’ve got this.
“I don’t seek power! I didn’t ask for this. I seek peace! For my friends and my people to be safe.”
This pathway is clear, the speaker declared. Receive this gift all in fear and trembling. In the end, it will be your end.
I didn’t need a forge anymore. Would never need one again.
It had flared to life when Malcolm had attacked me, but it had lain dormant ever since. I hadn’t called on it. There had been no need. And in truth, I’d been too scared to try.
Not Solace’s power, halved to accommodate the new split weapons. This was twice the power, and it was electrifying.
“It’s okay, Osha. Many women have appreciated my posterior in a pair of leathers. I don’t let it go to my head.”
“I’d spend the fortunes of the universe to protect you. I’d drain the seas dry. Fell every tree. I would sacrifice the sun from the fucking sky and surrender the stars, too, if I could. But those things aren’t mine to give. All I have is my life. It isn’t much, but I’d spend it and consider the price small if it meant keeping you safe.”
“The way that you love me. Some would say that is your weakness.” The lines of his face softened. “Some would say that,” he agreed. “But they would be wrong. It’s my strength.”
I wasn’t humming to the fox. That would have been weird.
The first fish drowned, the second fish froze, and the third fish swallowed them all…
trying and failing to pretend that I was unmoved by the gesture. “Thank you, little one.”
“Dreams are just vapor and smoke,” I said. “They mean nothing unless you’re willing to live them.
“IT’S CALLED BRIMSTONE. It isn’t like our blood, exactly. It is what keeps a fire sprite alive, though,”
I will not rob you of your path by insisting I carry you.”
But all dreams had to come to an end.
“Break?”
Once, he had told me that his people swore an oath not to use the magic they were born with.
Thanks to Tal, Renfis had known. Everlayne, too. But they’d been Oath Bound not to tell anyone where I was. They hadn’t been able to explain to these fighters that I had not abandoned them willingly.
“I’m yours to command, Queen Saeris,”
In an estate full of valuables and riches, it was the books they were saving.
