Today we were taking part in the high-school version of torture—the beep test.
“No need to hope. It will always be you.”
“Nope. I couldn’t do it even if one of my book boyfriends showed up at school. And some of them are perfect.” I laughed. “Yeah, guys in the real world have a lot to live up to if you read.”
“So, are you reading anything good at the moment?” Lily’s eyes lit up, and she happily launched into conversation about her latest fantasy read. She became animated as she explained the story and the characters. I liked how passionate she was whenever she talked about books. She also spared no detail as she told me about some of the more intimate parts of the book, and I had to wonder how someone so quiet and sweet could enjoy such a spicy read.
“Because everyone’s talking about what a cute couple you are, and I’m wondering if I should start to call you sis?” My eyes narrowed on him, but he didn’t seem the least bit concerned by my scowl. “Don’t call me sis.” “But we’re practically family.” “I think I preferred talking about faerie porn with you.”
“So, have you put any thought into a costume for tomorrow?” I asked. “Well, Sawyer’s pissed at me because I told him I was planning to go as Thor. He wants me to dress as the Goose to his Maverick.” “Of course, Sawyer thinks he’s Maverick.” I laughed.
“I still don’t think I could have left you. It was like you were asking me to leave my own heart to be eaten by the flames.”
“A fire didn’t kill me, but a hug from the two of you just might. I can’t breathe, you guys.”
“I love you,” I blurted out. “Noah, I love you so much. You nearly died tonight, and I just can’t handle the thought of a world without you in it. A world where you don’t know just how much you mean to me. I’ve loved you even when I’ve hated you, and I just needed you to know.”
“You told me you loved me tonight.” “Because I do,” I replied. “You said it too. And then you proved it when you jumped in front of a bullet for me.” “Well, if I’d known all I had to do was jump in front of a bullet to prove my love for you, I would have done it sooner.”
I knew now that nothing could tear us apart and as Noah stared into my eyes, I felt like I could see our future clearly too. Our future, together.
