“We’re pregnant Brooks. I’m having your baby.” My heart pounds. “Sara Langfield, say it again.” Her cheeks go rosy as her grin widens. “We’re having a baby, Brooks. We made a baby.”
Damn. I’m going to be a dad. I cradle my wife, unable to stop touching her, and let that sink in. From this moment on, our lives will never be the same.
Beckett: Ah duck, Brooks. Congrats. You’re going to make one hell of a father. Me: How did you…don’t say anything to anyone. We JUST found out. Beckett: Come by the house later. I’ve got a glass of whiskey with your name on it. I won’t tell anyone until you’re ready. Me: Thanks, Beckett. If I haven’t said it lately, thank you for everything. You and Gavin showed me what it means to be a dad.
“Of course, Brooks. Where you go, I follow.” He chuckles as he bends to press his lips to mine. But before kissing me he says, “You’ve got it all wrong, Sar. I’ve been following you around for years, and I plan to do it for the rest of my life.”
“I didn’t inseminate you. I—” He struggles to find a word that means exactly what I said. “Got really deep and filled me with your seed?” “Sara.” “Painted my insides with your cum?” “Where the hell do you come up with this stuff? Stop reading Lennox’s books.” I laugh. “I can’t. They’re just too good. And you’re the one who doesn’t like the word inseminate.”
I’m not a stupid man, and I’ll fight every demon of yours and prove to you day in and day out that not only am I not scared of this life, I want it. I want the late-night feedings. I want the loud, happy moments. I want you to wake me up in the middle of the night when you have a craving and when our baby does something crazy, like smile because she just took a huge shit.”
“I want you to watch how I fuck up into you, Peaches. I want you to see the way my body needs you. The way you open for me. I know I’m your one and only, so you don’t know this, but baby, it’s not always like this. In fact it’s never been like this for me with anyone but you. You’re not only enough, you’re it. Without you, I’m not enough. Without us, my life was a shallow void.”
“We’re having twins?” I adjust Vivi and lean down so I can press my palm to my wife’s cheek. “You did good, Peaches. You did real good.”
Me: So about that brownstone… Beckett: As I was saying, I saved the best for last.
“Why are you squeezing your thighs tightly together?” “Was just thinking about Millie being pregnant with twins, and my kitty got scared. Can you imagine the stretching that thing will be put through.” “Oh my god, Len, can we not!”
“I don’t want to be like Beckett!” Gavin hollers from who knows where in the house. “Sure ya do!” Beckett screams. “Beckett’s ducking awesome.” That’d be my husband.
“And just think, none of that would have happened if Delia’s aunt didn’t die and leave her that house,” Liv adds. “Ducking Medusa,” Beckett grumbles, but he saunters up to Liv and wraps an arm around her, nuzzling into her neck. “We should probably send her a fruit basket or something,” Gavin muses as he walks in carrying an oversized Bolts teddy bear. “She prefers the blood of Corporate America, but be my guest,” Beckett mutters.
“You are so getting lucky later.” He presses his lips to my nose and then drags his mouth to my ear. “I’m always lucky, Lex. I’m the leprechaun and I married you.”
God knows I love Beckett’s ideas. Even if it’s just because they drive Gavin nuts and always end in someone falling in love. Wonder who’s next on the chopping block?
I rack my brain for all the deals we’ve made. There’s been plenty. I won’t fall in love with her. Broke that one before we even shook on it. No catching feelings. She broke that one too. Fake marriage—yeah there’s nothing fake about our marriage. Get a divorce after she gets her trust—she’ll have to forge my signature with my cold dead hand if she expects I’ll ever let her go.
Daniel caught us up there with his now wife. “Come on,” he’d yelled as he covered his girl’s eyes, “you guys don’t even live here anymore. And you have your own hot tub!”
I’ll kill them. No one sees the parts of my wife reserved for me and keeps their sight.”
“Okay hockey boy, show me this hot tub.” I almost trip over my own two feet trying to spin around and catch up to her. But I don’t go too fast. I love watching her ass jiggle as she struts through the room with absolutely no shame.
Can I really be a good father with all that I have to continuously work through? What happens when I have a depressive episode and we have a newborn? What if it only makes it worse? What if our child ends up with the same depression I have? What if…
I lean down and press a kiss to my niece’s blonde head. She looks more and more like Sara every day. I take a huge whiff of her; that baby scent will have to hold me off from trying to impregnate my wife again.
“Normally, it’s the mother who can’t eat enough when she’s breastfeeding,” I say knowingly. Brooks snorts. “That’s what I’m saying. Sara eats everything in sight. There’s nothing left for me.” Aiden cracks up as he walks into the kitchen. “I wish I’d recorded that. Sara would actually murder you for saying that about her.” Brooks pouts. “I’m a growing boy, I need to eat.”
But after hearing all of our stories, they think our relationships would make for some great books.” I have to agree. I’d read the shit out of us if we were a series.
I banged the boss today.” Liv’s eyes narrow. “What are you talking about?” “The new COO of the Boston Revs. I banged her on my desk today. After I spent twenty minutes between her perfect thighs.”
“I’m going to become very busy. What will you do with yourself?” “Oh, I’m sure I can find someone’s love life to meddle in.” “Don’t you dare.” I place my hands over my wife’s on my chest and hold them there. I’m not letting her go. “Sienna—” “Beckett, leave your sister alone.”
“Call it off, Beckett. Whatever you had planned—” She stares me down and then repeats herself slowly. “Call. It. Off.” Ducking hell. It might already be too late.
