If—when—I betrayed his people, that sword of his would find its way through my lying throat. Maybe I wouldn’t even blame him.
“Coward.” His eyebrows arched. “What did you call me, Princess?” “I called you a coward.” The gasps at my back only fueled my rage. “Watch yourself, girl. Your ignorance is showing.” “As is your true nature,” I spat. “Only fools and liars burn books and people’s homes.”
Ransom dragged his thumb over his wet mouth. “Odessa.” It hadn’t taken him long to master my name. I left before he could wield it like that sword he carried.
“When I am nothing but dust and ash, Turah will endure. I do not need a crown. And I have made peace with my destiny. But before I step into my grave, my choice is you.”
“It’s a shock you even have blood in your veins for all the godsdamn blood oaths you’ve sworn. Let me guess. You can’t share the details?”
“I love you.” “Yes, you do. Don’t forget.” “Never.” “Neither will I.” His throat bobbed as he swallowed. “I will find you. Here, or in the shades.”
