“I was told the Gold King’s eldest daughter was weak. I see my spies have been mistaken.”
A month? What happened in a month?
Could Ransom withstand flames? Was that Lyssa? Or was he simply unafraid?
“What did Ramsey mean, you have a month?” “He expects me to join him in Allesaria on the autumnal equinox.”
“He has requested my presence in Allesaria to act as his general.”
“I told you to stay quiet today.” “I couldn’t help myself. He made me mad.” “Gods save the men who make you mad.”
The look of a man who was trying to figure out what to say. I waited. And waited. And waited. “What?” “Nothing.” He dropped my hand, dragging his own over his face. “Good night, my queen.”
What was wrong with me that I wasn’t enough?
“I have to let go.” “Of what?” “You,” I whispered. “You are not mine to keep.”
“What if I was yours?”
“I saw you in Roslo. On the cliffside.”
“I know a thing or two about pretending,” he said. “About leading a dual life and wearing a disguise.”
Had he held it to the light, it wouldn’t have shone red. It would have been the darkest of greens.
“You are the crown prince. It was all a ruse.” “Not all of it.”
“I am not long for this realm, Odessa. And when I’m gone, you will be free.
“Enough.” Ransom cut a hand through the air. “You’ll hurt yourself.” “Fuck you and your concern.”
“You’re not weak,” Ransom said. “I knew that the moment you jumped off that cliff.”
“You are not a pawn, Odessa. Not to me. You are the Sparrow. You are my wife. You are the future queen of Turah.”
“The truth!” I shouted into his face. “You should have told them, you should have told me, the truth.”
Why give me hope only to rip it away? If Ransom died, I’d never be free. I would be left to mourn his ghost for the rest of my days.
They turned gold. The same gold I saw each morning in my mirror. “You are mine, Odessa.”
“And I hate you.” “Now who’s the liar?”
And if I didn’t get out of his arms right this instant, I might never let him go.
“I’m sorry, my queen.”
“We shouldn’t have to fight this hard, Ransom,” I whispered. Love shouldn’t come with this many lies. “Why not? Isn’t this what we should be fighting for?”
It was like that first breath after jumping off a cliff, plunging into the ocean, and breaking free from the surface to fill my lungs. It was like being remade.
“I asked if there was something wrong with your lips. You keep touching them.” My hand dropped away from my mouth like it was a hot stone. “Oh. I’m, uh…thirsty.”
“Miss me, my queen?” Yes.
“The rooms beneath yours.” And now I wouldn’t sleep a wink.
“You’re a pain in my ass.” “So eloquent, my queen. Also, that’s my line.”
Humans weren’t meant to live without the sun and moons and clean air to breathe.
“By killing the Voster. End the brotherhood, and you end their magic bonds.”
Ransom held my eyes. And didn’t speak a word. He didn’t have to. His silence was answer enough. Allesaria.
Love had its way of building us up. And bringing us down.
Lies of omission were still lies. But they were easier to forgive.
“Forgive me, my queen. Please.”
“That little boy. He—” Oh, gods. It was a nightmare. A scene I’d play out for the rest of my life, wondering if it was real. “Ransom.” “I know.” He hauled me into his arms, crushing me against his chest.
He was a mess. And so beautiful that my throat burned with the threat of tears.
“Are you all right?” “Yes, my queen.” He bowed. “Are you?” I am now.
“That child was born to fly.” Cathlin stared at Evie with love brimming in her gaze. A mother’s love? “You will all need to be mindful not to clip her wings.”
I missed sitting here alone but not feeling alone.
“My queen.” He held up a dagger in a plain scabbard, extending it over the threshold. “A gift.”
“What if it’s me?”
