The Guardian. A man rumored to be more vicious and deadly than any creature crafted by the gods.
At first glance, he was just a man. Striking. Intimidating. But still, just a man. Yet his irises did not have the typical Turan green starburst. They were solid, molten silver. Liquid metal. Colorless, like my dress. The Guardian.
Could he read minds? Well, if he could read mine… Go away. Please and thank you.
My eyes were solid gold. Not a starburst in sight.
“Gods.” Father sighed, dragging a palm over his jaw. “I’m sorry, Dess.” My entire body jolted. When was the last time he’d called me Dess? It had been years. And I’d never heard him apologize.
“They have something I want in that city.”
It is our only chance at stopping the crux.”
A King cannot kill his Sparrow, and a Sparrow cannot kill her King, either directly or indirectly, without death befalling them both.
my queen?”
Not with this damn crown on my head. What if I tossed it in the ocean? I laughed to myself, imagining Margot’s face. Oh, it was tempting.
“Morning, my queen.”
“Then I guess I’m trapped between two monsters.” “You have no idea how accurate that statement is,”
I might be the woman wearing the crown, but Jocelyn was the one with the riches, wasn’t she?

my queen.”
He might be a jackass, but at least he was handsome.

I will not humiliate myself because you deem me insignificant. If you wanted me to stay quiet, then you should have let that marroweel kill me. I am not one of your warriors to lead. I am not your wife to command. So no, we do not have an understanding.”
His eyes were hazel today. Maybe that was their normal shade. I preferred the vivid, bold colors. It made it easier to remember that he wasn’t a normal man.
Uh… Shouldn’t that blood be red?
“It’s unlikely. Though there are other beasts to fear on the Krisenth besides marroweels.” “Like you?”
“Don’t worry, my queen. We’ll keep you safe,” the Guardian said. “Especially if you stay. On. The. Fucking. Ship.”
But what if I was tired of being kept? What if I didn’t want to rely on a man to be my rescuer?
my queen?”
“Surprise, surprise. I’m not scared of you.”
The gleam in his eyes made my stomach knot. Shit. I was in so much trouble.
“You might earn my name one day. But make no mistake, Cross. I will never trust you.”
“Any chance that this is where we’ll part ways?” “Not yet.”
“Welcome to Turah, my queen.”
This wasn’t the last I’d see of the High Priest, was it? There was no way for me to be certain, but I knew, in my bones, he wasn’t done ruining my life quite yet.
“Fine.” If fine meant I wanted to die, then yes, I was fine.
“Need help with your hair?”
“Such rage, my queen.
