There aren’t many deterrents for violence in this place, but the guards keep a loose handle on fighting by forcing any offender to dig their victim’s grave all night. Usually, by morning, the graves are unnecessary since both the digger and the body will have been eaten by beasts.

“This is exactly why I told you not to move so far from home. If you’d stayed in Philly, you could have driven.”

In college, I had a huge group of friends, but over the years, we all grew apart. Now, I’m all too aware that I don’t have anyone else to text about my day or grab dinner with or invite to my upcoming thirtieth birthday.

I dressed quickly in my human clothing, leaving my prison rags on the ground. Then I cast a small glamor over myself. Nothing so strong as to make myself invisible, but now, any human I came across would see me as human instead of Fae. Perhaps I’d still look more attractive than the average human, but that really couldn’t be helped.

Then, she leaned her head on her hand and stared off into space for a long moment. She looked…sad? Angry, perhaps? “Oh my God, I’m losing my mind,” she said. “I doubt that, Peaches,” I blurted before I could stop myself. Those words had been the biggest mistake of my life.

Aside from the enormous bed, there isn’t all that much other furniture in the room. I throw open a large white and gold wardrobe and find it empty. Beside that, there is a small vanity table with nothing on it but a golden candelabra and an empty chipped teacup.

For a long charged second, I stand on the steps, letting the rain soak me to the bone as I try to decide if I should ask for help or keep running. Then, I snap out of it. I choose the bear. I twirl on my heel and dash down the slippery stone steps.

I feel like I’m playing the worst game of would-you-rather in history.  Would you rather that your one night stand kidnapped you and took you to a castle full of monsters, or that you’re really hallucinating in a mental hospital amidst a divorce-induced psychotic break?

A blood-curdling scream bursts from me, and I scramble backward, trying to put as much distance between myself and the largest wolf I’ve ever seen. Actually, what the fuck am I thinking? I’ve never seen a wolf in real life.

Just try to relax, and I’m just going to find you something else to wear. Do you have any requests?” “Sweatpants?” I blurt out without thinking. She laughs melodically. “Unfortunately, no. I wish. Human clothing is so interesting, I’d just die to be a part of your world.”

He moves closer, and something pangs in my chest. He reaches for my chin and forces my eyes back up to his, literally holding my attention. “I told you, I’m not going to let anything happen to you. As long as I’m breathing, no one will touch you.”

I can feel Daemon’s cold, furious gaze on me all through the rest of dinner. He’s seething, and I know that the moment we’re dismissed to walk back to my room, he’s going to unleash all that fury on me. Strangely, I’m almost looking forward to it.

“You were busy,” I say. “I’m not going to wait around for any man. My time and attention belong to people who are thinking about no one but me.” Without warning, his hand shoots out and lands on the wall behind my head, boxing me in. He leans down so his mouth is mere inches from mine and bares his teeth. “Then I should get every single minute of your fucking attention.”

“Are you going to join us for dinner?” I ask. She shakes her head, stopping at the edge of the garden where the lights of the house are visible once more, and the top of the little tower stands out against the dark sky. “No…I don’t think so. But it was nice to meet you, Alix.” She gives me a mischievous smile and glances once at Jett before retreating into the house.

We walk up to the front door of the house and two blue-jacketed guards step aside to let us pass. One nods at me and I nod back, recognizing him as one of the guards who was at the gate when I first arrived at the Winter Palace a thousand years ago.
Joslyn
