“You promise you’ll always be my best friend?” “Yeah, I promise. Of course I promise.” “You sure?” “How many times do I gotta say it? I promise I’ll always be your best friend. Nothing will ever change that. I can’t think of a single thing that would ever make me stop loving you. You’re the sky and I’m the stars, Becky. We’re stuck together. Okay?” “Okay.”
Why the fuck did he have to call me? Why the fuck did he have to give a shit?
“You’re the sky and I’m the stars, Becky. You’re stuck with me.”
Memories were a strange thing. Sometimes they’d just sit in some dark corner of your mind, gathering dust for years and years and years. Just forgotten moments that didn’t make the final cut. But then something would trigger them—a sound, a smell, a word—and they would hurtle to the forefront with a frightening clarity.
“Because part of me still loves you, Gavin. And that part will always love you, no matter what you do. I know you’re in pain. And you need to know that I will never, ever try to make you feel ashamed of who you are. You used to trust me to help you, when you needed it. You can trust me again. I’m the same person I’ve always been. I’m not the one who changed.”
So…I love you for everything you were, everything you are, and everything you’re choosing to be.”
