No. “Yes.”
Breathe. Breathe, Seraphine. Don’t let it win, my love. Fight. You need to fight. Stay with me. Please—stay with me.
I sink my teeth into his bottom lip, and he growls, a low growl that makes me want to kill everyone in the room so I can have all of him.
“Look at me,” he grits, the shadow hands opening me wider. “Fucking look at me.”
To end the suffering within me and my realms.
Don’t look at her. Don’t fucking look at her.
“You have no idea what you’re asking me, Seraphine.”
I’m either going to strangle her or kiss her.
“Can you be any more of a fucking headache?”
“Because by the time the sun appears on the horizon, I’ll be apprehended for murder, and I don’t want you anywhere near me when I do.”
I want all your firsts, my love. Your firsts and lasts and forever. You can take it. Does it hurt? I’ll stop. You have me until you no longer need me. Marry me, not him.
I’ll send the twins for you. Don’t you dare leave the room alone.
“Be a good girl for me, little mortal. I’ll return in the evening.”
I woke to the chair being empty and what I could have sworn felt like the linger of a kiss on my forehead.
If I die on this island over the goddamn flu, I will scream. Forever the dramatic little mortal, aren’t you?
What are you doing? Dane’s answer is instant. Passing time. Should I stop?
God, I need this man deep inside me.
Do not whimper to your god, little mortal. I’ll burn down the remaining realms before I hear you call out to someone else.
His voice is breathy in my head. Would you look at that? You can feel me too.
I can feel how soaked you are, he tells me. You’re so warm around your fingers. Are you going to come for me? Only if you come for me, I counter. I always fucking do, he growls, and everything shatters into smithereens with how deep his voice is in my head.
The urge to be inside you is just getting worse, he says, his voice strained. But we can’t take any shortcuts. No more recklessness. Understand?
“What do you think the tasks are for, little mortal?”
“I hate you.” “You really don’t,” he counters.
“What are you doing to me, mortal?”
“You’re burning up! I’m trying to get you into the bathtub.” He tries to lift his head to look at me and drops back. “Fuck.”
“Hips up,” I order. “I need to take your pants off.” His brow moves, but he does as he’s told. “You’ve said that to me before. Do you remember the night of our fourth ceremony?” I frown. “I assume you’re confusing me with a former flame.”
“Looks like I might be dying, little mortal. It’s your lucky day. It’s a shame we never got to do the next task.”
Dane tries to pull my hand away, but it’s stuck, until something rips me away from him, catapulting me out of the tub and against the bathroom wall.
“Your name is Seraphine Dalton, Queen of the realms, and have been for nearly six hundred fucking years.”
“I won’t fuck up again, my love. I promise.”
A wave of guilt hits me. Unexplainable. It nearly suffocates me as the back of my eyes sting. “Dane…” “I’m sorry,” he replies. “So, so sorry.”
I let out a breath. “Good.” Not good. I want a reason to kiss him without admitting to myself I actually do want a kiss—a real kiss.
He squeezes his eyes shut with a rush of pain. “You owe me a fucking kiss for this.” My lips part. “You want to kiss me?”
“Haven’t I made that obvious?” I smile and nod with a blush to my cheeks despite our current misfortune. “Fine. If this works, I’ll kiss you.” “Deal.”
