Ubi amici ibi opes
You are the only thing that matters to me in this godsforsaken world.
I wish I could give you more than my voice. Memnon hesitates, then continues. I wish I could be there and hold you in my arms until all your pain and sadness were gone.
How do you truly feel? I ask timidly. Like I could conquer the world just to lay it all at your feet. His voice turns serious. Roxi, you are my first and last thought each day. I have longed for you more than I care to admit—not just as my friend and confidant but also as my lover and wife and amage.
Little witch, he continues. I’m coming for you.
Hope might be a god, but it is such a capricious, fickle one.
“My eyes have waited years to see you.” His gaze deepens. “But it was worth the wait.”
“I have crossed rivers and kingdoms, I have fought armies and bandits to be here before you. For you are mine and I am yours, and those are my soul’s deepest truths.”
“I rode for two months so that I might feel your embrace.” His eyes dance like fire. “Of course you can touch me.”
“I swear the stars look different since you’ve been by my side,” Memnon says.
“It is because I love you, dear daughter, that I insist you become a dangerous thing.
I sense his smile. Oh, I know, little witch. You’ll get your revenge. I’m eager for it. But unfortunately for you, it won’t be tonight. Until your magic returns, you’re at my whim. And I’m sorry to say, I’m not very merciful.
“I will conquer the world,” he vows, echoing his long-ago words to me, “just to lay it all at your feet.”
