Her lips hit his but not for a kiss. Eyes open and staring into his, her lips moving against his lips, she warned, “I’m gonna kiss you, babe.” His fingers pressed into her waist and he warned back, “This is not a good idea, Dusty.” Her eyes flared in a way he felt in his dick and her mouth moved against his so he knew she’d smiled. “Yeah?” she asked, but didn’t wait for an answer. “Well, I’ve carried through with a lot of bad ideas, gorgeous. And I’ve done all right.”
I’d always loved everything about Mike Haines. His thick dark blond hair. His tall, lean frame. His easy smile. The way he teased, which was never mean and always sweet. The way, when he was looking at you, he made you feel like the rest of the world had melted away and you were the only person he could see.
“You know, I don’t know what went down with your wife or that Violet woman. What I do know is I’m not them. And I also know that twice, you jumped to conclusions about me, this time making it three. And I’ll mention that not one of those times did you actually take the time to speak to me like an adult about the shit going on in your head. So, I’ll add to things I’m glad about, and that is that I don’t have to endure a lifetime, or however long we might have lasted, of your tests. Me proving I’m good enough for the super-hot, gorgeous Mike Haines. Because frankly, that would be exhausting.”
“But you don’t want to be a new dad in your forties,” I reminded him of something he just then told me. His arm got tighter, he pushed me deeper into the wall and his voice got lower when he said, “This is the deal, Angel. You…ran…away from me. And I tasted regret for the first time in my life. And that didn’t sting, it fuckin’ killed. So you need to know this. You want kids, I’ll give them to you and, trust me, sweetheart, I’ll be happy. I like kids and, like I said, you and me’ll make beautiful ones.
“Thinkin’ it’s time to make another baby, Vi.” She stopped smiling but forced herself to do it. Inside, she still was. This was because this wasn’t the first time Joe informed her he was thinking about this. Approximately one week after she gave him their daughter Angela, he started sharing these same thoughts. “Already gave you one, Joe.” “Want a boy this time.” Vi rolled her eyes. “I don’t think my womb produces boys,” she informed him. “We’re gonna see.”
“I’m falling in love with you, Mike Haines.” As I spoke, with every word his arms got tighter and tighter and his face, already close, became a breath away. “Angel, you’re already gone.” I blinked and asked, “Sorry?” “I read your diaries. I caught your pass in that hotel room. I listened to your offer to stay. I saw you wave good-bye at the airport and got your call before I’d pulled out of the parking lot. You fell with a kiss. I know, honey, because I was right there with you.”
Fin’s eyes narrowed on Rees then on me. “Why are you guys crying?” I waved my hand in the air then dashed it on my face and explained, “We’re girls. Today was full of drama. After a day filled with drama we do three things. Eat until we feel sick. Throw a tantrum. Or collapse into tears. Sometimes it’s a combo of two, bad times it’s all three. Trust me, honey, we picked the best one.”
