Armed with a burrito, Edie rounded her car and sprinted to intercept the zombie.
Oh gods, she didn’t want to die. But she couldn’t let someone else—anyone else—perish while she ran to rescue herself. Not again.
Funny, he didn’t sound like he planned to murder her with his bare hands. More patronize her to death, with suffocating condescension his unknown species’ weapon of choice.
“Of course I have feelings, human. I experience many emotions. Anger. Impatience. Disgust. Boredom. Schadenfreude.”
“I thought you’d died.” On the verge of tears, she poked him in the chest. “I was so fucking scared, Max, and so fucking horrified that you’d drowned to protect me.”
Some things were important enough to justify any risk.
“I’m grateful to care deeply about anything at all, sweet Edie. And I’m beyond lucky to care deeply about you.”
“They saved you, my Edie. Their beautiful sunbeam of a child.” His voice was very, very soft. “There is nothing in this world that could give their sacrifice more meaning. Nothing.”
“Revenge is a dish best served whilst coldly cockblocking vampires.”
