There is a real sense of people who feel like they are part of something bigger than themselves—and part of something that connects them to each other. It’s a very different description than most reporters would give. But most of them didn’t grow up in places like Butler, where my family originally settled in the 1790s. Most mainstream media reporters don’t know people like those who attend these rallies. It’s foreign to them, and they often describe them in their stories as “strange,” “weird,” “uneducated,” “far-right,” or “left behind.”
Yet, at this moment, he did those two things at the same time, actions that he had never done before, and they saved his life.
