“I miss Walter too,” I added, reaching out and squeezing his hand. “And unfortunately, you will find you’ll miss Walter more as time goes on, not the other way around.”

“Moirai appears. At least that’s what they say. Clearly they’ve not extended me an invitation prior to this, so I wouldn’t know. It is an incredibly small group that goes and a significantly smaller one that returns. It is always by invitation only, and I’ve heard tales from the very few who have returned that it moves and relocates, appearing only by necessity so as to keep the Fates and the Ascended from harm.”

“It doesn’t matter how good you are at rescuing, because I’ve never been one to want to be saved,”

I want to crawl inside you and consume my way out, knowing that every part of you is forever a part of me. I crave command over every thought you’ve ever had, to feel every worthless surface that has ever touched your skin. I want your needs and cravings buried so inside my own flesh and bones, they become indistinguishable from my own. That’s what I want, pet.

“He loves you,” he stated as he turned and looked out at the dark figure across the lake. “In a way that I am incapable of.” Like a broken bobblehead doll, I just nodded, unable to figure out what it was I really wanted to say. “You and I are not supposed to be together in that way. Be honest with me, Cal: we both feel it. What you and I have is a soul-tied friendship. We’ve been through things most family members don’t go through together, and we are both insanely good-looking. Of course we were going to get a little confused after not seeing each other for so long,” he said with one of his ridiculously charming winks.

But when I imagined being separated from Mendax, all the warm feelings turned to cold emptiness. It would destroy him. He would turn shades of dark the world had never seen, but then his life would go on. The world didn’t stop for heartbreak or devastation. That I knew.

I don’t need either of you. I am the only villain I truly fight, and I am the only hero I need to save.

Humans had no idea about all the magic that was only a fairy ring or tree hollow away. They kept their worries at bay and disguised and soothed their instincts with fables and fiction…or they believed it was all fiction.
