“My woman, my bed,” Mendax purred. “Sleep on the floor, fox.”

“If you do not get your pretty little ass up this tree and out of danger in the next three seconds, I will drag you up by your pretty little throat. Fucking go.”
“Suns above, you fucking pervert. You liked that? You liked me threatening you?”
“Who will you kill for me?” My voice was thick and raspy, as it so often was when I spoke to Mendax. Was he referring to my father or Eli? “Everyone.”
Stunned by the simple gesture, my mouth gaped open like a trout as I watched the prince of death and darkness hold my hand like a fourteen-year-old trying out affection for the first time.
In a moment of pure panic, I looked to Mendax. I’m here. I’ll do whatever you want. Just tell me what it is you need from me.
