When we pull off the road, he cuts the engine. I unfold my body, then attempt to unclip my seat belt. Kade’s protective hand latches onto my wrist. Dark eyes bore into mine and his voice is pure gravel. “Wait in the truck.”
What does it say about the men of our society when women feel safer with a fucking bear?
“You claim to be a man, don’t you? But the way I see it, you’re nothing but a punk-ass coward. Real men know the value of the women they’re holding. They don’t raise their voice. They don’t demand control outside of the bedroom. And they certainly don’t use the person they love as a fuckin’ punching bag.”
I’m rapidly developing a sick, relentless, undeniable obsession … with her.
“We own thousands of acres, there are dozens if not hundreds of animals buried on this property.” I give a nonchalant shrug. “What’s one more pig?” “Kade. We own a cattle ranch.”
She needs to learn I am someone she can confide in, the guy who will burn down the world to keep her safe. She’s a drug I haven’t taken, but I’m already hooked.
Like it or not, Sage has become the current I’m drowning in, and I’m too far gone to swim for shore.
“Fuckin’ hell, Sage,” I whisper into the dark. “What is it about you that makes me fucking feral?”
The men in my life come with the cost of my peace. I’m living in a nightmare, and I have no clue how to wake myself up.
Sage doesn’t need a knight in shining armor; she needs someone who understands the darkness and stands guard at the edge of it.
I’m not the warm and fuzzy kinda guy who spews declarations of love and lifetimes. I’m possessive, erratic, and pretty damn sure my morals are divided across two personas.
I’ve already killed one man with my bare hands, and before morning arrives, I’ll have disposed of another. All. For. Her. Should that scare me? Probably. Does it? Absolutely fucking not.
“No body, no crime,” she finishes. Ohhh. Oh, I like where this is going. I tilt my head, feigning ignorance. “So what are you suggesting?” She sets down her cup, straightening her shoulders. “We put his body in the wood chipper, dump it into the compost pile, then take the spreader and spray it throughout the field. Potatoes go in this afternoon, so by the time someone comes sniffing around, Ridge will be part of next season’s harvest.”
“You’re going to trust me someday—with your whole heart.” His brow arches, as if daring me to argue. “I’ll prove myself to you. I fuckin’ promise.”
While you were busy burning the world down for me, I was busy falling for you. I love you, Kade Rivers.”
“The medallion never makes the choice—the gambler who flips it does.”
