“We should keep this going,” she rushes out, darting a glance up at me. “It would look weird if we separated right away.” She feels the same way. I don’t know if she loves me, but she feels something, and she isn’t ready for this to be over, either.
Six more months, my brain whispers. I don’t know why I said that. I don’t know why I’m prolonging something that’ll hurt me either way. Maybe it’s because I’m in love with him.
“What?” I blanche. “You got a tattoo. You got a tattoo.” “Yes.” The corner of his mouth ticks up. “I got a tattoo.” “Of what?” I’m desperate to see it. “I’ll show you when you’re ready.”
Hazel and Rory’s wedding is beautiful, romantic, and fun. “Hazel Hartley-Miller, I love you more than anything,” Rory says during their vows, blinking away vulnerability and emotion from his eyes.
“Remember when you didn’t want to kiss me?” I ask Alexei. He presses his lips to my temple. “We don’t have that problem anymore.”
Ward smiles down at his daughter, who’s holding his hand and wearing a pink party dress, before he sneaks a glance at Jordan. She looks anywhere but at him.
“Tell me it’s real, sweetheart.” Does he mean this marriage, or what we’re doing right now? I don’t care. The answer’s the same for both. For me, at least. “It’s real.”
His mouth comes to my ear. “Let go for me. I’ll be there to catch you.”
“Sweetheart.” My voice is a dry rasp, and her head jolts up. Red and puffy eyes. Tearstained face. My chest aches. I can handle the other pain, but this? No. I can’t take this. I’m done playing hockey. I know that now.
This woman loves me. Watching me get hurt hurts her. I’m hurting her. It’s so simple when I put it that way. I reach for her hand. “I’m done with hockey.”
Ward leans forward. “I’ve got an assistant coach position with your name on it, if you’re interested.”
“Does he know?” “About us?” She nods. I think back to her walking past his office, and Ward saying too bad you aren’t married to a Canadian. “The whole thing was his idea.”
“Uh.” She looks to Jordan. She and Ward are talking in the corner, glaring at each other. Why does Ward look so annoyed? I didn’t even realize he knew Jordan. He almost never comes to the bar. “Ross is Jordan’s father.”
“Come on, Hellfire. Let’s go have that wedding night we never got.”
