Classically, what we now understand to be TB was seen as several different diseases. From the pancreas to the spinal cord to the lymphatic system to the brain, a tuberculosis infection can cause a wide array of illness, from brain swelling (tuberculous meningitis) to the rupture of infected lymph nodes through the skin (scrofula) to tuberculosis of the bone, which can cause lifelong disability through destroying hip, spine, or limb bones.
