“Every alpha in your pack has their way of keeping track of you, Emmeline,” he said nonchalantly. “Mine is just more thorough.”
“You were injured in the explosion. You’ve expended a lot of energy healing and keeping me safe. I bet you haven’t even slept. Don’t push me on this, dragon. Eat the fucking food.” A flicker of a smile ghosted over his lips, so fast that I probably imagined it, but he did reach out and grasp the bowl. There was the briefest graze of our fingers, which set off an entire kaleidoscope of butterflies in my gut. “Whatever you need, Snow.”
The varying depth of emotions most shifters experienced were not familiar to me. I lived in a world of black and white, facts and figures, data and code. Emmeline Anders was all color and grayscale, spontaneity and beauty. It was a foreign language. Ironic, considering I could speak almost every language known to shifters. Just not Emmeline Anders, apparently.
I really needed to add cardio into my daily life, but now was not the time to compare our abilities. Slade couldn’t… uh, there had to be shit he couldn’t do as well as me. Like… menstruate. Yes! I was an expert at that, and speaking of, I was due any day, so it’d be excellent if that didn’t happen while I was in captivity. My periods usually knocked me down for at least a day with terrible bleeding and cramps, and there was no way to hide the scent of blood in a house of alphas. Yeah, okay, so clearly I wasn’t even an expert at menstruation, but I was still better at it than Slade.
“I’ve waited a lifetime for you, Emmeline,” he whispered close to my ear. “And if I’ve learned anything since you came into my life, it’s that if you’re not alive then I’m not alive. I refuse to do this shit without you. I can’t do this without you. That’s just how it is now and forever.”
“I was just reminding Emme that her heart beats for more than one now.”
“I’ve got you, baby girl,” he whispered. “Fall apart. Fall all the fucking way apart and trust me to hold the pieces. Until I put you back together.”
“For our scent match to feed us… it’s a gesture of courting. Our beasts are losing their minds.”
I stared hard as he wrapped his lips around the spoon. Oh, damn. In my next life, I wanted to come back as that fucking spoon.
“I didn’t sleep inside you though,” he rumbled, and everything went a little blurry as the blood rushed to my vagina. “Therefore, I did not, and will never, have enough omega time.”
“We are equals in the pack. Even as the entitled alpha I acknowledge that. The only reason there is any hierarchy at all is for our beasts, but you must know you’re the core and heart of the pack. Always protect your heart.” “Because you can’t survive without it,” Slade finished, and I was absolutely fucking gutted.
Having her complete focus while I stared into her striking blue eyes was second only to tasting and touching her. Our omega was so beautiful that I found myself stunned like a fucking pup when she gave me her full focus. It hurt. In the best way.
“Good girl,” Slade said, and at the same time Hunter rasped, “There’s our good girl.” I almost slipped off my chair as my panties took part in a slip-and-slide contest we were clearly winning.
“Don’t apologize. I understand why you came to the conclusion you did. Our path to this point hasn’t been smooth, and you’ve lived most of your life feeling like a burden in your own home. But I need you to understand, Emme, that I would choose you in every situation. In every life. The goddess knew exactly what she was doing bringing you into my life. You’re my perfect match and the other half to my soul.”
Touch her and die was my new motto.
“Even a king should kneel before his queen. You will never accept anything less, from anyone, including those in our pack. Promise me.”
Not many would have looked at all of me and my messy life and thought, Yep, I want this mess. That’s my mess.
My little omega kept life interesting, and for the first time, I had hope. Hope that I’d found a reason to keep fighting for my soul—a five-foot-eleven, strawberry-blond-with-freckles, kind of reason. Bring it on, Snow. Show me your best.
