So here’s Hattie, standing in front of me, jaw agape, eyes round with horror, projecting the eventual looming death of her own very good father onto the death of my very shit one. She’s devastated for me; She is more devastated for her though; she just doesn’t realize it.

It’s a funny part of growing up, actually… Accepting that things that are better for you, healthier—they can still be painful.
