Nevertheless, it was quite galling to be told not to be rash by a man who had served twelve years in the wizard prison, Azkaban, escaped, attempted to commit the murder he had been convicted for in the first place, then gone on the run with a stolen Hippogriff.
‘Hang on. This Lord Voldything’s back, you say.’ ‘Yes.’ ‘The one who murdered your parents.’ ‘Yes.’ ‘And now he’s sending Dismembers after you?’ ‘Looks like it,’ said Harry.
‘Remember my last, Petunia.’
The Headquarters of the Order of the Phoenix may be found at number twelve, Grimmauld Place, London.
‘Well, as everyone thinks I’m a mad mass-murderer and the Ministry’s put a ten thousand Galleon price on my head, I can hardly stroll up the street and start handing out leaflets, can I?’ said Sirius restlessly.
‘And I’m not a very popular dinner guest with most of the community,’ said Lupin. ‘It’s an occupational hazard of being a werewolf.’
‘Tonks and Arthur would lose their jobs at the Ministry if they started shooting their mouths off,’ said Sirius, ‘and it’s very important for us to have spies inside the Ministry, because you can bet Voldemort will have them.’ ‘We’ve managed to convince a couple of people, though,’ said Mr Weasley. ‘Tonks here, for one – she’s too young to have been in the Order of the Phoenix last time, and having Aurors on our side is a huge advantage – Kingsley Shacklebolt’s been a real...

‘But Dumbledore says he doesn’t care what they do as long as they don’t take him off the Chocolate Frog Cards,’ said Bill, grinning.
‘Witness for the defence, Albus Percival Wulfric Brian Dumbledore,’ said a quiet voice from behind Harry, who turned his head so fast he cricked his neck.
‘Wit beyond measure is man’s greatest treasure,’ said Luna in a singsong voice.
‘So top grade’s “O” for “Outstanding”,’ she was saying, ‘and then there’s “A” –’ ‘No, “E”,’ George corrected her, ‘“E” for “Exceeds Expectations”. And I’ve always thought Fred and I should’ve got “E” in everything, because we exceeded expectations just by turning up for the exams.’
‘Of course I do!’ said Sirius. ‘D’you think your father and I would’ve lain down and taken orders from an old hag like Umbridge?’
‘Because it is a room that a person can only enter,’ said Dobby seriously, ‘when they have real need of it. Sometimes it is there, and sometimes it is not, but when it appears, it is always equipped for the seeker’s needs.
‘Good,’ said Harry quietly, when she told him, ‘because we’ve found somewhere to have our first Defence meeting. Tonight, eight o’clock, seventh floor opposite that tapestry of Barnabas the Barmy being clubbed by those trolls. Can you tell Katie and Alicia?’
She pinned the piece of parchment with all of their signatures on it on to the wall and wrote across the top in large letters: DUMBLEDORE’S ARMY
Hufflepuffs to the basement corridor that also led to the kitchens; the Ravenclaws to a tower on the west side of the castle, and the Gryffindors along the corridor to the Fat Lady’s portrait.
‘On real Galleons that’s just a serial number referring to the goblin who cast the coin. On these fake coins, though, the numbers will change to reflect the time and date of the next meeting. The coins will grow hot when the date changes, so if you’re carrying them in a pocket you’ll be able to feel them. We take one each, and when Harry sets the date of the next meeting he’ll change the numbers on his coin, and because I’ve put a Protean Charm on them, they’ll all change to mimic his.’
Fred had said that Ron might yet make him and George proud, and that they were seriously considering admitting he was related to them, something they assured him they had been trying to deny for four years.
October extinguished itself in a rush of howling winds and driving rain and November arrived, cold as frozen iron, with hard frosts every morning and icy draughts that bit at exposed hands and faces.
‘Well, that’s a good sign, I never feel you perform as well in exams if you’re not a bit nervous,’ said Hermione heartily.
‘Just because you’ve got the emotional range of a teaspoon doesn’t mean we all have,’ said Hermione nastily, picking up her quill again.
the stone gargoyle guarding the entrance to Dumbledore’s office. ‘Fizzing Whizzbee,’ said Professor McGonagall.
‘I know it’s hard, but we’ve all got to act as though we don’t know anything yet. We’ve got to stay put, at least until we hear from your mother, all right?’
They had arrived outside a large, old-fashioned, red-brick department store called Purge & Dowse Ltd.
Harry noticed the emblem embroidered on their chests: a wand and bone, crossed. ‘Are they doctors?’ he asked Ron quietly. ‘Doctors?’ said Ron, looking startled. ‘Those Muggle nutters that cut people up? Nah, they’re Healers.’
Dilys Derwent St Mungo’s Healer 1722–1741 Headmistress of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry 1741–1768
‘If you’ve dotted the “i”s and crossed the “t”s then you may do whatever you please!’
did,’ he said glumly. ‘Dumbledore told me but I promised I wouldn’t tell anyone … that’s what Bellatrix Lestrange got sent to Azkaban for, using the Cruciatus Curse on Neville’s parents until they lost their minds.’
‘The Headmaster has sent me to tell you, Potter, that it is his wish for you to study Occlumency this term.’ ‘Study what?’ said Harry blankly. Snape’s sneer became more pronounced. ‘Occlumency, Potter. The magical defence of the mind against external penetration. An obscure branch of magic, but a highly useful one.’
‘And why does Professor Dumbledore think I need it, sir?’ said Harry, looking directly into Snape’s eyes and wondering whether Snape would answer. Snape looked back at him for a moment and then said contemptuously, ‘Surely even you could have worked that out by now, Potter? The Dark Lord is highly skilled at Legilimency –’ ‘What’s that? Sir?’ ‘It is the ability to extract feelings and memories from another person’s mind –’ ‘He
The Dark Lord, for instance, almost always knows when somebody is lying to him. Only those skilled at Occlumency are able to shut down those feelings and memories that contradict the lie, and so can utter falsehoods in his presence without detection.’
‘Then you will find yourself easy prey for the Dark Lord!’ said Snape savagely. ‘Fools who wear their hearts proudly on their sleeves, who cannot control their emotions, who wallow in sad memories and allow themselves to be provoked so easily – weak people, in other words – they stand no chance against his powers! He will penetrate your mind with absurd ease, Potter!’
‘You are to rid your mind of all emotion every night before sleep; empty it, make it blank and calm, you understand?’
Bellatrix Lestrange, convicted of the torture and permanent incapacitation of Frank and Alice Longbottom.
‘Two coffees, please,’ said Cho. In the time it took for their coffees to arrive, Roger Davies and his girlfriend had started kissing over their sugar bowl. Harry wished they wouldn’t; he felt that Davies was setting a standard with which Cho would soon expect him to compete. He felt his face growing hot and tried staring out of the window, but it was so steamed up he couldn’t see the street outside. To postpone the moment when he would have to look at Cho, he stared up at the ceiling as though examining the paintwork and received a handful of confetti in the face from their hovering cherub.

He dreamed that Neville and Professor Sprout were waltzing around the Room of Requirement while Professor McGonagall played the bagpipes.
so he tried to push the matter to the back of his mind. Unfortunately, the back of his mind was no longer the secure place it had once been.
Harry stared at him. He could not see how Dumbledore was going to talk him out of this one;
‘So,’ sneered Fudge, recovering himself, ‘you intend to take on Dawlish, Shacklebolt, Dolores and myself single-handed, do you, Dumbledore?’ ‘Merlin’s beard, no,’ said Dumbledore, smiling, ‘not unless you are foolish enough to force me to.’ ‘He will not be single-handed!’ said Professor McGonagall loudly, plunging her hand inside her robes. ‘Oh yes he will, Minerva!’ said Dumbledore sharply. ‘Hogwarts needs you!’ ‘Enough of this rubbish!’ said Fudge, pulling out his own wand. ‘Dawlish! Shacklebolt! Take him!’
Harry stopped in front of the desk and gazed down at his fifteen-year-old father. Excitement exploded in the pit of his stomach: it was as though he was looking at himself but with deliberate mistakes. James’s eyes were hazel, his nose was slightly longer than Harry’s and there was no scar on his forehead, but they had the same thin face, same mouth, same eyebrows; James’s hair stuck up at the back exactly as Harry’s did, his hands could have been Harry’s and Harry could tell that, when James stood up, they would be within an inch of each other in height. James
‘We’ve got about as much chance of winning the Quidditch Cup this year as Dad’s got of becoming Minister for Magic.’
‘Special discounts to Hogwarts students who swear they’re going to use our products to get rid of this old bat,’ added George, pointing at Professor Umbridge.
Harry found this an odd question … ‘What is it?’ was the one he had been planning on asking.
‘But I daresay the Ministry of Magic will track him down soon enough.’ ‘I doubt it,’ shouted tiny Professor Marchbanks, ‘not if Dumbledore doesn’t want to be found! I should know … examined him personally in Transfiguration and Charms when he did N.E.W.T.s … did things with a wand I’d never seen before.’

‘Silencio!’ cried Hermione and the man’s voice was extinguished.
