“We are the Morrigan,” the one with golden eyes said. “My sisters and I have been sent to serve as your guide through Tartarus and accompany you on what will be the greatest test of your life.”
“Estrella Barlowe will die here. The moment you pass through these gates, you can do so knowing beyond a shadow of a doubt that your life has come to an end. There is not a single path in which the Fates let you leave here without knowing the touch of death.”
“Better to die free than live on your knees,”
“A tempest is a violent storm, is it not? Would you not consider yourself to have wreaked havoc on the world that existed until he refused to let you die?”
“Because you, dear Tempest, were first born in the Cradle of Creation,” she said, stealing the wind from my lungs.
“Because the last being Fenrir allowed to ride him was his original owner,” Badb answered, holding my gaze as Fenrir paused his steps. I found my fingers running through his fur, seeking comfort from the friend that went deeper than words. “The last being Fenrir allowed to ride him was the very thing that existed before death. He was the embodiment of nothingness. A distinct lack of life. He is where death comes from. He is the Void.”
“Khaos.” The golden-eyed man who claimed to be my father in the Void when I drew too much power from him was Khaos. The father of everything and nothing. Shit.
“Your father gave something to you to set you apart from his other offspring.”
“The magic you possess is his gift to you. A piece of himself that he has not given to any other,”
I raced toward the creature holding him captive. Not my fucking murder puppy.
I’d made me stronger. I’d survived what was done to me and come out the other side in spite of the hardships of my life, not because of them. Suffering to gain strength was a ridiculous excuse crafted by abusers and the privileged.
“And since when have women with that kind of power ever been allowed to have a life of comfort? I think deep down, you have always known that she was made for more. I think you’ve always known, in your heart, exactly what she is and what she was born to be. There is a darkness in her that you’ll need to accept,”
“Until chaos reigns,” Medusa said, turning to look at the river as she spoke the words that struck me straight in the heart. The words I’d spoken to my mate in love, meaning it as an impossibility to indicate I would never stop loving her.
“Let your mother prepare you for me, Little One,” he said as I released his hand and turned to face him more fully. “Enjoy your alone time while it lasts. After the ceremony, you’re mine.”
“We have an eternity to take our time,” she whispered, reaching between our bodies to touch her fingers to the hollow of muscle at my hip. She slid them in a line over the curve there, moving slowly to the center until she found the fabric of my pants all over again. “For now, I just want you to fuck me.”
“Our love isn’t gentle or kind. It’s rough and all-consuming; it’s a raging inferno that destroys the world in its wake.”
“But be warned, there will soon come a time where you must continue your journey alone. Your mate will not be permitted to pass through our temple to enter the Cradle of Creation. For that part of your journey, you will continue alone.”
Because she wanted to be submissive to me and me alone because I was the only one who could make her kneel at my feet and do what she was fucking told.
If my life was always going to end in flames, if I was always going to be destined to die, then why was I fighting so hard to stay in the world of the living?
“Prove them right,” Medusa said with a shrug. “Sometimes a monster is exactly what the world needs to right the wrongs that have been committed for centuries. You have let your fear of what you could be hold you back for far too long. You didn’t even think to try to remove the snake from your mate’s heart because you feared you would fail.” “I could have killed him. The risks were too high—” “And what would have happened if you succeeded? Who might you have saved in the process? Your fear of yourself is your greatest weakness. Be the fucking monster, Estrella. For they will judge you as one

“Promise me you won’t forget. Promise me you’ll make our deaths matter,”
“They have known of your existence since they drew their first breath. They have seen your destiny since the first thread was spun. They created your father from the darkness, not so that he might be born, but so that one day, you would be.”
“All things must die, Estrella. All lives must end.”
It is your destiny to end the cycle that has existed since the dawn of creation. It is your destiny to remake the world as you see fit and begin anew. It is your destiny to destroy us all, so that we can be reborn from the ashes of your wrath,”
“From chaos, she was born.”
“And in chaos, she will reign.”
