Silas, Hendry, and Edmund were already up, loading the horses again, and I glanced over to see Roland open-mouth snoozing. “He’s a heavy sleeper,” Edmund commented with a half-smile, his emerald-green eyes glinting with entertainment. “And that’s saying a lot, coming from Edmund,” Hendry added, which earned him a playful nudge from the blond soldier. I couldn’t help the smile curving on my lips. I think I’m growing to like those two.
Lena was meant to be part of all this

Did my death really take away that sweet, playful man? Was he always this somber? I sighed, feeling pain in my chest at the thought.
I nudged him with my foot. “Wake up, sleepy head,” I crooned. He winced, swatting me away. “Just…a few minutes,” he grumbled. “I don’t think so.” I nudged him harder. “Up.” He cracked an eye open, then gave me a devious smirk. “You look especially sexy from this angle, Ginger Snap.” My eyes constricted, and I placed my boot on his chest, causing him to let out an ‘oof.’ “You look especially unsexy with drool on your face.” He narrowed his eyes, his smile growing, and replied, “How can I not have drool on my face when I’m picturing you sitting on it?” My eyes flared, and I withdrew my foot

My thoughts flicked to the Half-Lives, the creatures that supposedly resided here. They were one of the many beings that had gone extinct, spiritual beings that could travel between our world and that of the Gods. Some said they were messengers of Ravaiana, while others believed they were Valor’s subjects, slaves of the Underworld. Who really knew? So much of our history had been wiped out when Solen La’Rune, Silas’s great-great-grandfather, had our mystic temples raided and shut down. When the banishments and prejudices really began. Even the books Igon had were but a fraction of our legacy.
“I’d take that as a warning,” Roland said, his tone deep and serious. “I’m surprised there’s not more blood.” That was a good point. There was no evidence of blood staining the sedimentary rock or anywhere on the ground. “Seems these vamps aren’t wasteful,” Merrick commented, his nose crinkling from the dreadful scent of decay. He angled his head to the side. “But why the display? Why warn off their food supply?” “It isn’t a warning,” I whispered. Silas quickly turned his head, his golden eyes meeting mine. “It’s to show us what’s to come. A promise.” I nodded gravely, and our eyes lingered

Why the flowers?
Sighing, I placed my hand over hers, the one still resting on my arm, and gave it a gentle squeeze. Everyone was far enough away not to hear as I leaned down and whispered, “It isn’t the first life I’ve taken for you. I don’t expect it to be the last.”
Still, I found Lena’s response…intimate. “I know that’s not true. I can see it in your eyes.” Why were they so gentle with one another? Why did Lena jump in front of one of our kind’s biggest enemies to save him? How is it that the Slayer of Witches flipped like a switch, so eager to help? I could see that perhaps he witnessed our power and realized utilizing it could help him overthrow King Ulric. I could. But why, when Silas was staring at Lena’s injured body back in Fort Laith…why, when I read him, did I feel love? Soul-Ties. It was the only damn explanation.
Leroy’s eyes darted between us for a moment before he laughed softly. “You surprise me, Prince.” Leroy then raised his hand. “Revelare.”
We all watched as Leroy’s glamour faded, as the ear his blonde hair was tucked behind turned pointed, and his pupils completely vanished. As we realized Leroy was a Warlock.
And for the first time in a while, I fell asleep with a smile on my face.
I suppose everyone desires what they cannot have, right?
“Let her heal you, Flower.” Lena cried softly, eyes meeting mine for a moment, searching.
Deep breaths. Merrick’s eyes remained dark. “Would you have loved her still?” I tilted my head toward him, brows furrowed. “Would you have loved her back then if she told you what she was?” What would I have done if she told me she was a Mage? Would I have been disgusted by her? Would I have had her banished, or after the kill order was placed, have her murdered? Would I have loved her still, despite it all? My stare was unwavering as I replied quietly, “Nothing could’ve made me not love her.” And I knew as his eyes widened slightly, as they returned to an icy blue, he knew I was telling the

when I whirled at the castle balcony, I saw her. Erabella. She lowered her bow, panting heavily. The Otacian Princess came out to fight after all. And she saved my life.
He went to storm off as if I'd actually allow that.
from collapsing. The guard to his right hauled out his chair, but I noticed that his eyes remained on me. He was handsome, so much so that it seemed bizarre seeing him stand
behind this King. He was older, probably in his forties, but his skin was smooth, nothing but the crinkles of his eyes giving away his age.
The guard to his right would not stop staring at me, his green eyes almost wide. Almost. He was doing his best to school his expression, but I could see through it.
Daelyra, Supreme of Ames.” I gave a mocking bow, and my smile vanished as I glared at him, my voice going low. “But there's no need to remember. When I get free of here, which I will, I promise I’m scorching every last one of you who have enslaved my people. Nothing will be left of you or this place when I’m finished.” The man's eyebrows rose, and then he mastered his shock as he studied me. A few moments passed. “No response?” I asked sweetly. His face became pained. “You…you look so much like her.”
A cry slipped past her lips, and I didn't know what overcame me…perhaps fear of her death, fear of mine. Or maybe it was the feelings I kept trying to push down since the first moment I saw her. I leaned down, capturing her luscious lips with my own. She stilled, her dainty hand that still held my face shaking. I read her as I pulled her bottom lip into my mouth, finding confidence in the overwhelming desire that flooded through her body, heightening my own. She withdrew slightly. “Merrick,” she rasped over my lips. “I…we can't—” I captured her lips again. “Just let me kiss you,” I whispered.

Clarity washed over me as I accepted that I had just kissed a married woman…and that she had kissed me back.
She was a beautiful whirlwind. A force to be reckoned with. She was everything I dreamed of and more. A spitfire, a siren.
This innocent child, bleeding out from a fatal wound, used her final moments to heal a cut on my face. All she wished for was a mother and father to take care of her…for freedom. I drifted my hand over her eyelids, closing them forever, tears pouring from my eyes for the first time in years as I held her lifeless body.
didn’t need to ask why I kept the kitten.
Sometimes, your demons hold so much power over you that you have to unleash them every now and again. To keep them from taking over completely.
I never thought I would let myself cry after what happened to me all those years ago, but nothing was more tragic than this. My life was filled with so much death and so much loss. Everything I touched found ruin as if I was cursed.
“Why would you take her doll?!” The thought of Saoirse alone in the dirt without the one thing that brought her comfort had me shaking. “Because we can never forget,” she cried softly, still holding the doll out for me. “Because she should be remembered. Now, and always.” My lip trembled, my eyes slowly blinking as I beheld the doll. I finally lifted my hand, taking the doll from her.
Sex with Silas was different. I felt complete when I’d been with him. Cherished. Understood. I felt calm and wild at the same time, worshipped and desired. I felt loved. He had always made me feel loved. My Soul-Tie. I could never be content without him. I knew this now for certain. I loved Torrin. I loved Roland. But that love wasn’t like my love for Silas. It couldn’t compare, no matter how badly I wanted it to.
“You consume all of me, Lena. You are my waking thought and the final picture I see before I sleep. You are a siren that haunts my dreams. It's been that way since the moment I met you.” I sighed in defeat. “There’s not a damn second you aren’t on my mind.” “Silas,” she cried softly. “You represent all that I could ever desire…and all I can never have.” My voice cracked as I whispered, “You have destroyed me…and I resent you for it.”
“How did you know you were this God of Deceit?” I breathed. “Who are you?” I jerked back at the sound of multiple screams from below. “Oh, you will know all in due time, Supreme.” He fixed his attention on Silas. “Unfaithful to your wife, huh?” He clicked his tongue, his grin wide. “I heard your words from earlier. You're just like your mother.” I couldn't even process anything as the wails of our friends grew louder.
“Lucky you, I suppose. My peace of mind perished the moment I met you. You've branded my soul, marking it as yours, even after all this time.”
“Nevertheless,” I murmured, “even with all the pain that has come with loving you, I would never choose to forget the beauty of the moments we shared. Because for me, those moments with you are the only beautiful memories I have.”
